What does a Creative Director do?

A Creative Director determines the creative vision of a brand or project and manifests that vision through digital, print and film installations. The job is to maintain a cohesive look and feel of a project—be it an advertising campaign, fashion line, video game or magazine—by ensuring the visuals, messaging and/or interactive and motion designs are on point. A Creative Director also establishes budgets and timelines and manages client relationships.


What are the responsibilities of a Creative Director?

The typical day-to-day responsibilities of a Creative Director include:

  • Manage the creative process of a project from concept to completion
  • Translate marketing objectives into clear creative strategies
  • Work closely with multidisciplinary project teams
  • Lead and direct the creative team in the production of all marketing collateral
  • Ensure visual communication and brand standards are met
  • Oversee client pitches and proposals
  • Oversee profitability, timelines, and budgets
  • Manage and cultivate the career development of staff members, including illustrators, designers, art directors, copywriters, photographers, and web developers


What are the requirements to be a Creative Director?

A Creative Director typically has worked their way up to that position from another creative role, such as Art Director, Designer, etc, so they must have experience within the field or as a Creative Director elsewhere. Depending on the field they’re in, Creative Directors usually have at least a bachelor’s degree in Art, Photography, Graphic Design, or something else creative. Mostly, though, when looking for a Creative Director, employers look for the ability to lead a creative team, be organized, and oversee projects from start to finish. Candidates must have knowledge in software such as Photoshop, Illustrator, and InDesign.
