Afternoon Reading List 10.08.13

morningreadinglistresized

Saying these 17 phrases may make others despise you: BuzzFeed Fellow (BuzzFeed has a fellow?) Adam Ellis made a contribution to society with his list of 17 misused and made-up phrases that people say all the time. Each of these pseudo-phrases is a terrible bastardization of an actual saying. Unfortunately the real phrases appear to be on the way out, while talking like a goon is becoming more and more popular.

Why you should read it: Double check and make sure you’re not one of those people who says things like ‘ostrich-sized,’ thinking it means something other than the size of an ostrich. Read more here.

Fox News host apologizes, finally understands ‘parody’: Yesterday, LAT’s Meredith Blake reported that Fox News’ host, Anna Kooimanofficially apologized for saying that that President Obama would personally pay out of pocket to keep the International Museum of Muslim Cultures open during the government shutdown. The false report was originally derived from a parody story that came out of the National Report, a satirical news site that’s worth checking out for a laugh and some fake news.

Why you should read it: Because you should read exactly how Kooiman and her producers swallowed their pride and made her tweet an apology, like a grown up. Except she didn’t actually admit what she was apologizing for. Stay tuned for that (we think) this weekend. Read more here.

A Chance to Meet Michelle Fields

We could hardly contain ourselves when we got word that Next Generation.TV’s Allen West and Michelle Fields would be the stars at an upcoming happy hour. Apparently neither could The Daily Caller‘s editor and columnist Christopher Bedford, who forwarded the party notice to colleagues, adding, “Allen West happy hour on Thursday. Word is you might get to meet Michelle Fields.”

Bedford’s remark might be tongue-in-cheek since Fields was fired from The Daily Caller in late August of 2012 for a lack in production. She still has friends there, however, notably, Jamie Weinstein (wink! wink!). Fields’ focus has always been on getting herself on TV, not writing stories.

The soirée is 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. on Thursday in Sonoma’s private dining room on Capitol Hill.

Brad Thor to Party at The Daily Caller

Author Brad Thor is spreading himself thin these days. Tuesday morning he appeared on “Morning Joe,” where host Mika Brzezinksi told him he’s likely never had a moment of writer’s block in his entire life. It wasn’t an insult, but maybe not entirely a compliment, either. Is he always that on and revved in his demeanor?

Thor was on the show to promote his new book, Hidden Order: A Thriller. The book involves a hidden part of the U.S. government. Spies. Murder. Counterterrorism experts. Sound vaguely familiar?

Thor’s becoming something of a media whore. On Wednesday morning he’ll go on WMAL’s Morning Show between 5 a.m. – 9 a.m.

Wednesday afternoon he comes to Washington as he’ll appear at a pre-book signing salute in The Daily Caller‘s barroom at 5:30 p.m. After that, he’ll head over to Sixth & I Synagogue for a 7 p.m. book signing and there will be a Q and A with reporter Jamie Weinstein.

So why a pre-party at The Daily Caller?

“Brad is a big fan of The Daily Caller and we wanted to return the favor by celebrating the release of his new book,” the DC‘s Advertising Director Alex Treadway told FishbowlDC. “We thought the perfect way would be to gather some readers, clients and friends to salute him with a beer before his book signing. We also arranged to have Jamie Weinstein lead the Q and A at the signing.”

Yahoo! News Scribe Vindicates Self In Misquoting Charge

In a Monday story that’ll make you actually want to hit somebody, Yahoo! News‘s Chris Moody recounted an incident at CPAC wherein former child conservative star Jonathan Krohn, now 18, is borderline bullied by a gaggle of right-wing bloggers.

One of the bloggers challenged the report as inaccurate, but Moody, having recorded the whole thing, was able to prove his story is straighter than a game of beer pong in a frat house.

On the second day of CPAC Krohn, who was attending as a freelancer for Salon, was cornered in a hallway after attending a panel discussion on Islam. He was chatting with The Daily Caller‘s Jamie Weinstein when 10 or so other CPAC attendees and bloggers approached. Among them, Townhall‘s Editor Katie Pavlich (Mean Girl 1) and Misfit Politics Editor-In-Chief Leah Sargent (Mean Girl 2).

“It was pretty rude,” Krohn told FishbowlDC. “I don’t want to make all this a point of controversy, but I know all three of us that were surrounded (Weinstein, Moody and myself) felt the set-up was intimidating.”

Moody wouldn’t comment on the record for this post, but his story describes the scene like this… Read more

Daily Caller Reporter to Appear on Bill Maher

Washington journalists are routinely called out to Los Angeles to appear on HBO’s “Real Time” With Bill Maher. On tap this week is The Daily Caller‘s Jamie Weinstein, who has often appeared on FNC’s “Red Eye.” It’s Jamie’s virgin Maher experience. Let’s hope it’s a good one.

Daily Caller Tip Sheet Lumps Ginni Thomas With Other Conservative ‘Clowns’

This is uncomfortable.

Ginni Thomas, a contributor at The Daily Caller, was grouped with other conservative “clowns” yesterday in a daily morning tip sheet written by The DC Senior Editor Jamie Weinstein.

The item by Weinstein linked to a story by his colleague Will Rahn involving a letter drafted by several movement conservatives defending the conservative Media Research Center’s Brent Bozell. Republican consultant Jonathan Collegio reportedly referred to Bozell as a “hater” on a local D.C. radio program this week. To that, other conservatives along with radio host Mark Levin and Thomas drafted a letter calling for Collegio to be fired from his job at the American Crossroads Super PAC.

Weinstein called it “a clown letter that embarrasses clowns.” More from his tip sheet… Read more

Reporter Avoids International Incident in Vietnam

The Daily Caller’s Jamie Weinstein recently took a trip to Vietnam and lived to tell the tale. He wrote ALL about his trip in this latest piece. Sure, there are fancier places to take a vacation, but the excitement of a place like Vietnam cannot be denied. So, I was intrigued to see what shenanigans Weinstein would get into while abroad.

For the most part, it was a tame trip that didn’t really give us anything new or particularly interesting. Anyone who has paid any amount of attention to the area knows that the traffic sucks, there are scooters everywhere and they try to whitewash history. That’s about all we get from Weinstein’s time there. It’s a very touristy vision of Vietnam. I bet he ate at McDonald’s the whole time.

There were a few takeaways from the trip, though… Read more

Politico Reporter Embraces Pointless Item

As bloggers, we know only too well that not every item is gold. But many writers try not to run items as pointless as this one by Politico‘s Reid Epstein. Epstein, typically an extremely capable and productive White House reporter, wrote this 44-word post about whether President Obama thinks NBC “Tonight Show” host Jay Leno is funny, which Epstein apparently –gasp!– confirmed with the White House.

What’s the White House going to say, “No, Reid, actually the President hates him, thinks he’s an asshole and doesn’t think he’s funny at all.” What’s more, the author hilariously … Read more
