Mikki Taylor: FLOTUS Brings ‘Sophistication’ to American Style

mediabistroTV bannerIn her new book Commander in Chic, Essence editor-at-large Mikki Taylor doles out fashion and beauty tips for the everyday woman based on examples from Michelle Obama.

“I love her clear cut assurance, the way she owns her style from within,” she explained in our Media Beat interview.

And one thing FLOTUS has done, according to Taylor, is inject a much needed sophistication into America’s dress code. Casual Fridays? No, thank you, she says.

“I think that we’re a little too relaxed. I think a relaxed nation creates other kinds of flexibilities that shouldn’t exist. Let’s treat each other with the respect and the honor that we are due, and so the subliminal things play into that. If we’re coming to work in sneakers, if we’re coming to work in ripped jeans and plaid shirts, who are we representing?”

Behar Thinks Biden Needs Caffeine

First Lady Michelle Obama and Dr. Jill Biden appeared on a special “Red, White & View” episode of ABC’s “The View” this morning to promote their new initiative in support of military families, Joining Forces.

Though the ladies were there for a purpose, co-host Joy Behar couldn’t resist cracking a joke to Dr. Biden: “Have you been giving [Joe] decaf?” The Second Lady took the ribbing well and laughed it off.

Behar was referring to the Veep’s nap during President Obama‘s speech at GWU last Wednesday.

First and Second Lady Announce New Initiative

This adorable picture will grace the cover of Parade magazine’s April 24th issue. First Lady Michelle Obama and Second Lady Jill Biden talked to the magazine about their new initiative, Joining Forces.

The White House announced the initiative today, the purpose of which is to support military families. Parade‘s press release says Obama and Biden plan to “educate, challenge, and encourage action from all sectors of our society” in support of the families of service men and women.

Mrs. Obama told Parade about her husband’s presidential campaign: “Everywhere I went there were military spouses, and their stories took my breath away – the pain of multiple deployments, trying to keep the family afloat. I remember sitting and crying with a group of them.”

Joining Forces is Obama and Biden’s first joint project, and the cover is their first cover together.

FLOTUS Makes TV Rounds on Trip to Mexico

First Lady Michelle Obama is taking her first solo international trip to Mexico this week (after a pit stop in Haiti, sharing a tarmac with actor Ben Stiller) and she’s getting the POTUS treatment.

She’ll sit-down with CNN for an interview that will air on “The Situation Room,” Wolf Blitzer tweets. NBC’s Savannah Guthrie will also interview FLOTUS for Wednesday’s “Daily Rundown” on MSNBC.

White House Rocks, Easter Eggs Roll

The Washington TimesJoe Curl, CBS’ Christine Delargy and ABC’s Jake Tapper were just a few of the media types FishbowlDC spotted taking in the festivities at the White House’s annual Easter Egg Roll today. We also caught up with NBC’s Norah O’Donnell, hubby Geoff Geoff and all three kids on the South Lawn.

O’Donnell joked, saying that the “mile-long lines to get into the event must be part of Michelle Obama’s fitness agenda.”

While FishbowlDC didn’t recognize many of the celebrity faces in the crowd, our kid correspondent Jocelyn Luddy clued us in to Disney Channel’s Zack and Cody as well as kiddie pop sensation Justin Bieber. And though we weren’t familiar with Bieber before today, it was obvious we were alone – even Ali Wentworth and Michelle Obama grooved to the teen’s tunes, showing their “Bieber fever.”

After a hot and sweaty hour or two, we caught some South Lawn yoga and then stood next to the First Lady for a performance by Sarah Bareilles. Only in Washington! Check out those pics on Twitter @fishbowldc and more pics of the event after the jump.

FishbowlDC’s “Overexposed in ’09″

Photobucket

Yep, ’tis the season for annual year in review “lists.” And though we too find them annoying, we couldn’t help but to create one of our own. So, we give you “Overexposed in ’09″ – 9 news topics that we’d rather see benched for 2010.

9. Michelle’s Magic Garden: Growing organic veggies is super cool in certain circles but we hope news stories about the First Lady’s au natural tomatoes will take a cue from Smith & Hawken and shut down this year.

8. Bo-ring: Sorry Bo, but you’ve become exhausting. We love dogs but the FDOTUS domination during Barbara Walters‘ interview with Michelle Obama pushed us over the edge. Unless Bo knocks up one of Paris Hilton‘s pooches, we don’t want to hear about it next year.

7. The Helen Thomas Diaries: her upcoming book, her anniversary, her birthday, her seat in the WH briefing room. A legend? Yes. But we’ve written her name more times in 2009 than we care to count.

6. Bronzed Boner: No further mention of House Minority Leader John Boehner‘s (R-OH) bronzed bod or the pronunciation of his surname would be most appreciated. We know his last name is not pronounced “Boner” and we’re fully aware of his tendency to tan.

5. Newsertainment: Say what you will about Glenn Beck but we’re over the media frenzy around the Fox News shock jock. Lesson learned – opinion programs blur the line between entertainment and information but covering Beck’s every comment only validates the importance of his “opinions.”

4. Salahi Scams: Not much would surprise us about the Salahi’s at this point. If you’ve done business with them, they probably screwed you. If you’ve spoken to them, they surely lied to you. Oh, Tareq and Michaele…we’ve had fun but it’s time to move on.

The top 3 topics after the jump.

PBS Amps Up Rating System

mo-9.jpegPBS, for the first time ever, is implementing a full-time rating service.

With this new full-time demographics rating service, the network seeks weekly ratings for more than 40 of its programs, including PBS NewsHour, Dinosaur Train (which we’re sure many of you watch) and Sesame Street for any First Lady Michelle Obama fans out there.

Last month she appeared on the beloved kid show, saying, “It’s probably the best thing I’ve done in the White House.”

Through improved data reporting, states a release, agencies will better understand how PBS sponsorship will benefit clients.

PBS has held a Nielsen contract since the 1980s; the new service is a marked increase, from 12 weeks to 52 weeks a year.
