Brooklyn Youth Chorus with Barbra Streisand at Barclays

The Barclays Center opened last week with a series of concerts by Jay-Z. He is part owner of the Brooklyn Nets, who will play at the Barclays starting this month. But for many, the arena is gets its official “welcoming committee” next week when Brooklyn’s own Barbra Streisand takes the stage for two shows. It marks the legendary performer’s first show on her home turf since her days in the Erasmus High School chorus. Streisand, 70, graduated from Erasmus in 1959.

The October 11 and October 13 concerts will flashback to the old days. Not only will the audience see a rare Streisand live performance, and even rarer, one in Brooklyn, the famed Brooklyn Youth Chorus will join Streisand on stage for a pair of encores.

The teens will accompany Streisand on the West Side Story classic Somewhere and Make Your Garden Grow from Candide, the Daily News reports.

Brooklyn Borough President Marty Markowitz was quoted in the newspaper saying, “It’s fabulous, just fabulous.”

Nicki Minaj Announces Free New York City Make-Up Concert

Queens native Nicki Minaj is finally giving fans what they want–a free concert. The August 14, New York City show is a make-up for bailing on Hot 97′s Summer Jam in June.

“We are excited to offer the first 1,500 fans the opportunity to attend the show,” a link from Minaj’s Twitter account stated on her Website. “You must line up at the venue no earlier than 12 noon at the secret location. The first 1,500 fans in line will receive wrist bands, that will guarantee access to the event.”

Fans are encouraged to fill out a modest form with their name, email address, age and state.

But Minaj isn’t just “talking” to fans. On her Website post, the rapper writes Hot 97, Power 105, Z100, 92.3 Now, and WBLI should “listen and win.”

During Summer Jam, Hot 97/WQHT morning personality Peter Rosenberg ripped Minaj’s new single Starships as too “pop” and not enough hip hop.

It didn’t take long for Minaj mentor, and head of her record label, L’il Wayne to pull her from the show.

At the time she tweeted, “I go above and beyond for my fans. But won’t ever go against wayne’s word. What  he says, goes.”

WCBS-FM Culminates 40th with Free Concert

It was the perfect night for a concert at Eisenhower Park in East Meadow, Long Island.

Making the evening even more ideal was that the concert was free.

As one big thank you to fans for 40 years of loyalty, WCBS-FM hosted its Saturday in the Park with disco great KC and the Sunshine Band.

The on-air gang was there for hours, just like the throngs of listeners. “Broadway” Bill Lee did a later than usual Saturday show, as a live remote just feet from the stage. Fittingly, he stayed on the air until, “Brooklyn’s Own” Joe Causi (above) started his Saturday Night Seventies on scene. The air personalities, including Ron Parker, signed autographs from adoring fans.

Causi provided the “opening act” for KC and the Sunshine Band. Waiting for the sun to set, the classic disco band took the stage at 8:30.

Headliner Nicki Minaj Bails on Hot 97 Summer Jam After Criticism From Morning Host Rosenberg

Nicki Minaj is one of the top rappers out there today. The Jamaica, Queens native was set to headline yesterday’s Hot 97 Summer Jam day-long concert at MetLife Stadium. But that never happened because just hours before Minaj was due to hit the stage, she was ordered by her mentor and record label head Li’l Wayne not to appear.

At issue, Hot 97/WQHT morning host Peter Rosenberg (simply Rosenberg on the air), according to the Daily News, made critical statements about Minaj latest song, Starships.

“Young Money ain’t doing summer jam,” Rosenberg tweeted, which is a reference to Wayne’s rap crew that includes Minaj.

And she didn’t.

“I go above and beyond for my fans. But won’t ever go against Wayne’s word. What he says, goes,” she tweeted last night.

In another tweet, she took a swipe at Hot 97, “I’d like to thank the staff @ Philly & Boston summer jams for treating their guests w/respect! Had a blast.”

A statement by Hot 97:

“Hot 97 Summer Jam is the biggest hip hop Festival in the world. It’s about more than one act, it always has been, it always will be. It is about a culture and we continue to deliver the greatest live hip hop experience on the planet.”

Hot 97 Makes Final Preparations for Summer Jam

Despite the forecast for isolated thunderstorms, Summer Jam 2012 will go forward Sunday at Metlife Stadium. The most anticipated hip hop concert of the year will also be the biggest live webcast in hip hop history.

For the second year in a row, Hot 97/WQHT is partnered with Boost Mobile to stream it live to millions of fans globally. Last year’s webcast  was seen in more than 20 countries and viewed by at least half million people.

“We are rewriting internet history again this year by creating a nine-hour live stream of both the Hot 97 Summer Jam Festival Stage and Main Stage, the longest major hip hop event ever streamed online,” Lin Dai, VP of Digital Programming for HOT 97, says. ”Through the
Loud Digital Network, millions of hip hop fans will be able to tune in around the world and experience the ‘Super Bowl of hip hop’ first hand.”

And that “Super Bowl” means, performances from many of the genre’s top names including Nikki Minaj, Young JeezyJ. Cole. Big Sean, and Trey Songz. Another Summer Jam signature is the surprise guests that will take the stage.

New this year, fans can watch the Festival Village pre-show featuring A$AP Rocky, Pusha T, School Boy Q, and Azealia Banks.

“Hot 97′s Summer Jam is an amazing hip hop event and a celebration that we want to share with the world,” Ebro Darden, WQHT program director, says. “…It’s going to be a great time.”
