Video: Pat Kiernan Makes Case for Live Job with Kelly

NY1 veteran anchor Pat Kiernan made his long-awaited debut on Live yesterday. Kiernan, as we reported earlier in the week, had been pushing for a chance to sit with Kelly Ripa for more than a year, dating back to when it was Regis Philbin‘s seat to fill.

Kiernan made the most of his golden opportunity, showing off his skills that NY1 viewers have known for years. He’s conversational and can certainly communicate with the best of them, even though Kiernan is no Hollywood heavyweight co-hosting with Ripa.

“I’m hard on myself. When I watched it back I could see the moments where I fumbled for a word or wasn’t quite sure what was happening next,” Kiernan admits to FishbowlNY. ”But the conversation with Kelly was effortless and I felt like we were truly ‘co’ hosts for the day.”

One of those effortless moments occured in the opening banter, as the relaxed Kiernan gave Ripa a tutorial on the finer points of displaying the daily newspapers, which he does in a popular segment each day on NY1. His on-air connection with Ripa is more amazing considering the duo never met until the dress rehearsal one day earlier. Watch the entire host chat below.

No word on a second stint for Kiernan at Live.

“We didn’t even discuss the topic of future bookings,” Kiernan says. “They’ve got a lot in the mix and they know that I’d be happy.” to return.

NY1′s Pat Kiernan Auditions For Dream Job, Co-Hosting Live

Canadian-born Pat Kiernan has been the morning anchor at NY1 since he joined the cable channel in 1997. But as much high visibility as the gig offers, it is nothing like what happens tomorrow.

Kiernan gets his first chance to sit alongside Kelly Ripa on Live.  For the veteran anchor, he  has made his desire to participate clear.

“I have long had an interest in co-hosting the show when Regis [Philbin] was there, if he went away,” Kiernan tells FishbowlNY. “But the opportunity never came  about.”

Once Philbin retired from the show in November, Kiernan stepped-up pursuit of securing a co-host shift ”in both my interviews and with my agent.”

Two weeks ago, Kiernan’s open campaigning finally paid off with the call he’s wanted for years—a slot opposite Ripa, whom he’s never met.

“I’m excited to see how it clicks with Kelly,” Kiernan says.

Mike Catherwood Says Radio Career Has Been ‘Insane’ Since Filling in on Live

Mike Catherwood is a 32-year old radio veteran, known to most people outside of New York as the co-host of the national syndicated Loveline with Dr. Drew. The show, though, is not heard in New York.

Catherwood, got his big exposure with the Big Apple when he was selected by Live with Regis and Kelly as part of the “Men of Radio Co-host for the Day” contest. By January of 2011, the native of Pasadena, California had a fill-in opportunity on the show opposite Kelly Ripa. That led to an appearance last season on Dancing With The Stars.

“It’s been insane. I’ve been lucky enough to have way more success in the radio industry than I could ever dream of. But the radio industry is an incredibly anonymous industry,” Catherwood says. “When you all of a sudden put your face out there on such a visible stage as the Regis and Kelly show, it was crazy to see people’s reactions.”

Caroline Manzo, Morgan Fairchild, Plus HarperCollins Fetes William Boyd

1003_mockup.gifOne of the things I love most about chronicling the Wednesday scene at Michael’s is the random celeb sightings that seem to come out of left field. On offer today: television stars of the past and present that represent the changing (and fickle?) tastes of the viewing public. When none other than Morgan Fairchild walked in (she’s even tinier in person), I had an eighties flashback to those great trashy nighttime soaps and damsel in distress Lifetime movies that were all the rage back then. A few minutes later, The Real Housewives of New Jersey‘s Caroline Manzo, today’s definition of a soap star, walked in. Funny enough, they were seated right next to each other but neither noticed the other. What can I say? This stuff fascinates me.

I was joined today by two PR mavens, Melanie Brandman, founder of The Brandman Agency, and Diana Biederman, managing director of Blackbird PR. After chewing over the week’s hottest gossip (Did Kim Kardashian do it for money? Has Kris Jenner no shame?), we had a good chat about Melanie’s latest luxury innovation, Travel Curator, which she describes as a hybrid online monthly magazine, diary and blog that shares the very best insider information on cities around the world.  Besides having exquisite taste, Melanie’s unrivaled experience in the hospitality industry and two decades of worldwide travel have given her quite an address book.

Table Seven: Diane Clehane, Diana Biederman and Melanie Brandman

“I’m constantly asked where to go to find the very best around the world and, since I love to share information, I thought this would be a fabulous way to do that.” The “content driven” site is absolutely gorgeous, including ‘The Spot” of the month. The native Aussie’s Sydney is the launch pick, followed by New York, London and Tel Aviv — all cities Melanie has called home. It also includes a fabulously fun section entitled “Tastemakers” where Melanie culls names from her Rolodex to offer their picks on shopping and travel in various locales. (Full disclosure: In an upcoming edition, I sing the praises of American Girl Place as the best place in NYC to spend a day with the special little girl in your life.) The site is getting great buzz; it was recently featured in Travel & Leisure and was the subject of two segments on Fox News. Right now, everything is being handled in-house at The Brandman Agency, and  it’s being circulated via subscription and by the agency’s extensive contact lists. So, before you pack for that next vacation, check out the site.

Here’s the rundown on today’s crowd:

Maria Sansone, Ready to Host LX’s 1stLook, Says New Version Will ‘Appeal to All Audiences’

It’s a revamped look for LX’s 1stLook with a familiar face.

She kept up those duties after leaving LX-produced New York Live for California in April.

Now, the talented TV personality is back on 1stLook—and make no mistake—this is her show.

“What we’re doing this season is just having one single host, and I am traveling to all of the cities.”

Gelman Laughs Off Media Speculation About Regis Replacement

Another good interview get today for TV Guide LA bureau chief Michael Schneider.

With Regis Philbin having made it official now that November 18 will be his last day on Live with Regis and Kelly, the journalist caught up with show producer Michael Gelman to get a sense of how the transition will be handled. So far, coverage of potential Regis replacements has apparently been about as prescient as the manner in which the media handled the end of the Kathie Lee Gifford era:

Despite earlier reports of frontrunners such as Ryan Seacrest, Bravo’s Andy Cohen and Kelly Ripa‘s husband, Mark Consuelos, Gelman says there’s no short list yet. “So much has already been printed, and a lot of it is laughable,” he says. “Just as when we were looking to replace Kathie Lee, everyone was throwing names out there, but no one even had Kelly’s name.”

TV Icon Regis Philbin Retiring From ‘Live With Regis and Kelly’

Legendary TV host Regis Philbin, 79, announced his retirement this morning on ‘Live! with Regis and Kelly.’ He is expected to stay with the show until the summer.

The broadcast started locally with The Morning Show on WABC in 1983. By 1988, Disney syndicated the one-hour daily program with then co-host Kathie Lee Gifford.

“WABC is proud to be the home of ‘LIVE! with Regis and Kelly,’ and it will be difficult to say goodbye to Regis after 28 years as a member of our family,” commented Dave Davis, president and general manager, WABC. “We will miss him as a colleague and friend.  We’re fortunate, however, to have two real pros who can lead ‘LIVE’ into the future – Kelly Ripa, who has spent the last ten years developing her own amazing voice in daytime talk, and Michael Gelman, who has been with the show since its inception and is one of the best executive producers in daytime television.”

Bryant Gumbel Reveals Cancer Diagnosis

Gumbel Ripa.jpgMaybe Kelly Ripa shouldn’t be so cavalier in calling herself “the black widow.”

This morning, with “Live with Regis and Kelly” co-host Regis Philbin out for hip replacement surgery, Ripa coaxed some previously undisclosed information out of fill-in host Bryant Gumbel. And when Gumbel revealed to the world that he had a malignant tumor removed from his lung two months ago, Ripa looked so shocked she almost fell off her chair.

“Oh my gosh, I had no idea,” she said. “I thought we were friends!”

Thankfully, Gumbel seems to be doing okay after his surgery and following treatment. “They opened up my chest, they took a malignant tumor, and they took part of my lung and they took some other goodies, and pathology on most of the stuff came back benign,” the former “Today” show anchor said. “But enough aggressive cells had escaped the tumor that it warranted some treatment, and I went through treatment, and it’s done now. We hope — we hope — it’s over and done with.”

Watch the whole thing unfold here. And here’s a tip for anyone who gets an offer to co-host with Ripa in the future: be very careful!

FishbowlNY @ Fashion Week: Media Models Ripa, Ray, Zahn Take To Runway

Ray5.jpgIn case this whole media thing doesn’t work out: Rachael Ray [left] prayed, Paula Zahn swanned, and Kelly Ripa clomped to the beat like any good super worth her $10,000 to wake up that day. While we didn’t get a good gander of First Lady Laura Bush, who was front-row and center for pet charity The Heart Truth’s fashion show Friday morning, we did catch some media misses hitting the runway to support heart health for women.
