In Praise of Susan, Siri, Scarlett and Samantha

There’s plenty of sibilance in the above headline. But fear not; both Susan C. Bennett (a.k.a Siri) and Scarlett I. Johansson (a.k.a Samantha in Her) can handle it.

It’s always nice to review the year with a category that requires only a Top Two. Such is the case with this pair of astounding female voices. One, from the past (endless recording sessions in 2005), was finally revealed this fall to be the ubiquitous voice of Siri. The other, enacting the near future in limited NY/LA theatrical release, has led journalists like Daily Beast culture writer Kevin Fallon to bang the drum for 2013 Best Actress Oscar consideration:

Scarlett Johansson has never been more alluring than she is in Her.

Her coy sexuality has never been so tantalizing. She’s as vivacious and gregarious as she is sensual and deep. She both gives her most nuanced performance yet and sears her status as one of the most desirable actresses working in Hollywood today.

Esquire Names Scarlett Johansson Sexiest Woman Alive

Tom Cruise-Katie Holmes Send-Up Rolls into New York

It was a smash in Chicago. Now, August 20-24 at the Players Theatre as part of the New York International Fringe Festival, TheTomKat Project is set to wow fans in the very city where Katie Holmes pulled the plug on her marriage to Tom Cruise one year ago.

The play, featuring just a few odd props and the narration of writer Brandon Ogborn, skewers celebrity, the media and the Church of Scientology. There is no pretense at conventional celebrity impressions; lead actors Walt Delaney and Julie Dahlinger don’t much look like Cruise or Holmes. But that’s half the fun, with the support of a  versatile group of co-stars:

Based on actual interviews and completely imagined scenes, seven actors portray 54 characters including Oprah Winfrey, David Miscavige, Matt Lauer, Scarlett Johansson, Josh Hartnett, Viacom chairman Sumner Redstone, Cruise/Wagner partner Paula Wagner, Steven Spielberg, Nicole Kidman and Suri.

Scarlett Johansson is This Century’s Sexiest O/S

FishbowlNY was lucky enough to recently get a look at the first screened footage from Spike Jonze‘s upcoming feature drama Her. A pair of non-color corrected scenes were shown during the closing weekend of the Los Angeles Film Festival, as part of a Q&A hosted by Jonze’s very good friend David O. Russell.

Scarlett Johansson voices the near-future, artificially intelligent O/S installed by loner writer Theodore (Joaquin Phoenix). The first scene shown depicts their “meeting,” after he reads the manual and answers a few set-up questions; the second sequence showcases a chimeric beach conversation, via shirt-pocketed Smartphone.

Vanity Fair just chose “part-time Parisian” Johansson for the cover of their inaugural French edition. Get ready for a whole bunch more magazine cover ooh-la-la as the November Her release date gets closer.

The Stage is Set for a Scintillating Hitchcock Adaptation

Deadline’s Mike Fleming was one of the first this morning to the news that after many years of failed attempts, Broadway adaptation rights for Alfred Hitchcock’s Rear Window have finally been secured. The lucky winning bidders are director Jay Russell and producer Charlie Lyons, whose previous film collaborations include Ladder 49 and The Water Horse.

In recent years, there have been various pick-ups on the 1954 classic. Shia Labeouf fronted 2007′s Disturbia, which was later challenged in court by the estate controlling the rights to Rear Window (the plaintiffs lost). Meanwhile, in 2009, Jason Sudeikis and January Jones did a questionable SNL riff featuring a very flatulent Grace Kelly.

Casting is going to be key. The 1998 ABC-TV movie remake for example very cleverly chose Christopher Reeve to play the James Stewart character, opposite Darryl Hanah as his concerned girlfriend.

GQ Profiles ‘The Man Who Hacked Hollywood’

At any given moment, there is typically one must-read Tinseltown feature article gracing one of the marquee east coast glossy monthly magazines. The latest item to claim that distinction can be found in the May issue of GQ and, as of this morning, on the publication’s website.

David Kushner’s “The Man Who Hacked Hollywood” offers a fascinating and detailed look at how an unassuming 290-pound Florida resident cracked the email accounts of top celebs, filmmakers and producers. In doing so, Chris Chaney was able to access all kinds of info besides nude pictures like the bathroom self-portrait taken by Scarlett Johansson:

After hacking the account of one producer, Chaney saw the entire filmmaking process, from start to finish. The producer was working on In Time, a film starring Justin Timberlake, Olivia Wilde, and Amanda Seyfried. Chaney breezed through copies of the script, set in a dystopian future where people die at age 26 unless they can afford to buy another day.

KROQ DJ Wins a Date with Scarlett Johansson

How much would you pay for an evening with Scarlett Johansson?

Well, Bean Baxter from the Kevin and Bean show on KROQ (106.7 FM) paid $7,000 in a charity auction to spend the evening with the bombshell actress at the New York premiere of We Bought A Zoo Monday night.

Sounds like the perfect evening right?

Try telling that to the morning show co-host who placed the bid as a joke in an attempt to burn his colleagues and has no desire to actually go through with the offer now that he’s won.

Scarlett Johansson Addresses Nude Photo Hack in Vanity Fair

Scarlett Johansson is speaking publicly about the phone hack that spread naked shots of her all over the Internet, prompting an FBI investigation that nailed a creepy Florida man. She talks about the whole affair as the cover story of this month’s Vanity Fair.

Not surprisingly, for someone who looks like Johansson, she isn’t embarrassed by the shots. “I know my best angles,” she told the mag, with what the writer describes as “her trademark insouciance.”

The photos were apparently intended for her then-husband Ryan Reynolds. “There’s nothing wrong with that. It’s not like I was shooting a porno,” she says. “Although there’s nothing wrong with that either.”

Johansson then digresses into her and Woody Allen‘s shared Hypochondria and why he isn’t casting her in movies any more.

The issue will hit LA newsstands (all three of them) on November 3. iPad geeks will have to wait a few extra days.

Alleged Celebrity Hacker Apologizes to His Starlet Victims

Christopher Chaney, the Florida man who is charged with hacking into the phones and emails of various Hollywood celebs–including Scarlett Johansson, whose naked photos wound up on the Internet–is very, very sorry for what he did. Which makes sense. Because he’s facing 121 years in prison. We’d be sorry as shit too.
