Lionel Adds His Two Cents as Early PIX Morning News Host

You have to give WPIX/Channel 11 and news director Bill Carey credit for constantly changing viewers minds for what a traditional newscast should look like.

The station, seeking a piece of the competitive morning race, is reinventing the wheel again. By making night time commentator Lionel as host of the 4 a.m. to 6 a.m., WPIX wants to lift itself out of the early hours abyss. In turn, the station would use that lead-in on the PIX Morning News with Sukanya Krishnan and Frances Rivera.

If you’ve watched PIX News at 10, then you’ve seen Lionel pontificate about a wide range of pressing matters. He’s given more than two minutes each night to weave a story with good writing, some humor and a dose of histrionics.

In the morning, right from the opening title, this is Lionel’s show. There are several shots of Lionel at Grand Central Terminal with his one name on the screen, before showing PIX Morning News. All that’s missing is the late Ed McMahon‘s…”Here’s Lionel!” Incidentally, later in the morning, there is no talent displayed in the open.

Dave Price Gets Started on Good Day New York

After nine years and several jobs later, Dave Price is back home at WNYW/Channel 5. Price took the seat next to Rosanna Scotto on Good Day New York. Good Day viewers will recall Price on the show from 1999 to 2003, then as the weather anchor.

“Look at who the wind blew in this morning,” Scotto opened the broadcast.

“I was fired,” Price retorted. “So I was just sitting around for 18 months.”

Gaining chemistry in front of the camera is one of the keys to making a morning newscast work, and the most elusive. Greg Kelly vacated Good Day to become the station’s lead anchor beginning tonight.  For four years, “Rosanna and Greg” had a perfect connection with each other and viewers. Despite Price’s previous work on Good Day, and occasionally with Scotto, that will take time.

“I’m not at home, I’m not comfortable yet,” Price said.

“Good, we don’t want you to get comfortable just yet,” Scotto responded.

After exiting Channel 5, Price worked as a weatherman at Channel 2 then as a meteorologist for CBS News.

“It’s been two years since you’ve actually been allowed back in the building,” Scotto said. “Weren’t you escorted from this place at one point?”

Battle of Morning News, WLNY Debuts on The Couch

The calendar says July, and next week is the Baseball All-Star Game. But don’t be fooled. Today was opening day!

A confluence of events created a trio of local morning changes.

The biggest is at independent station WLNY 10/55, now under the auspices of WCBS, which makes its first foray into daytime news.

Live from the Couch brings WCBS morning weathercaster John Elliott and sports anchor Lisa Kerney to the sofa with TV newcomer Carolina Bermudez.

The program is a mix of news, lifestyle and entertainment features. However, the accent is definitely on the lighter fare. There is the typical news and weather update on the half-hour.

Despite he fact that Bermudez comes to WLNY from her time as news reader on WHTZ/Z100, every aspect of the show is shared. Although Elliott goes to his other “day job” with the forecast.

Lionel Poised to Take Helm of Revamp Early Morning WPIX Newscast

After two days of reporting the anchor shake-up at WNYW, we can now tell you that a competitor is also making some alterations.

WPIX/Channel 11 is unveiling a new schedule to take effect Monday before dawn.

Lionel will host a revamped two-hour block from 4-6 a.m. FishbowlNY has obtained a memo that news director Bill Carey sent to staffers. In it, Carey points out that the broadcast will be used as a springboard to build viewership, especially with the revenue-generating 7-9 a.m. broadcast, anchored by Sukanya Krishnan and Frances Rivera. FishbowlNY has learned the Lionel-led program will be a conversational, two hours with his unique perspective.

Viewers already see Lionel’s insight in much smaller doses at 5 and 10 p.m. with Jodi Applegate. A WPIX spokesperson says Lionel will continue to provide commentary on the 10 p.m. broadcast.

This time may be the perfect to strike.

Starting Monday, Dave Price joins Rosanna Scotto as co-host on Good Day New York. Greg Kelly takes over on the nightside. Independent station and newly WCBS-owned, WLNY makes its long-awaited attempt in morning news.

Weighing Some Options for Sue Simmons

In light of Sue Simmons saying she wants to work again in her farewell broadcast at Channel 4, the question becomes, where might we see her next?

Simmons ended her incredible run at WNBC on June 15 announcing that she would like to be “employed elsewhere at some point.” The longtime anchor added that she’d be interested even if it’s once a week.

The viewing public, by and large, has opposed WNBC’s decision to terminate the veteran anchor. Just look at any of the comments from our FishbowlNY stories, and you’ll see overwhelming support for Sue.

While FishbowlNY is not acting as her agent in the process, let’s evaluate the possible suitors for Simmons.

WCBS/Channel 2, it would appear, has the no vacancy sign flashing at the Inn weeknights. However, if Simmons would double her once a week request, a weekend slot with veteran newsman Don Dahler could prove beneficial for all parties.

WCBS Weather Anchor John Elliott Takes Seat on The Talk

Channel 2 weathercaster John Elliott is visiting Los Angeles for today’s edition of The Talk.

The show, co-hosted by Sara Gilbert, Sharon Osbourne, Sheryl Underwood, and Aisha Tyler, is assembling some of the best CBS-owned news and weather anchors from around the country. The talent will join the roundtable as guest hosts in place of vacationing Julie Chen each day this week.

For Elliott, it’s a homecoming of sorts. Before joining WCBS, Elliott had two-year stint as the KCBS morning weather forecaster.

The Talk appearance also gives Elliott a chance to get his banter going in preparation for his work on WLNY’s new morning program, starting early next month.

The two-hour Live from the Couch is expected to give viewers a focus on entertainment and lifestyle stories.

The Talk airs from 2 to 3 p.m. every weekday on WCBS.

WLNY Morning Team Revealed for Live from the Couch

Caroline Bermudez, John Elliott, and Lisa Kerney have been named hosts of Live from the Couch. The WLNY 10/55 morning program airs from 7 to 9 beginning in early July.

The WCBS-produced show features a mix of news, talk, entertainment, and lifestyle segments.

Bermudez joins WLNY following her successful seven-year stint as co-host of Elvis Duran and The Morning Show, which originates at Z100/WHTZ and is heard on 55 stations nationwide.

“We are very excited to be bringing a distinctive new morning show to the tri-state area featuring Carolina, John and Lisa – three extremely bright and entertaining broadcasters,” said Betty Ellen Berlamino, vice president and station manager, WLNY. “With the launch of Live From the Couch in the morning and our new one-hour primetime newscast, WLNY News At 9 p.m., next month we look forward to significantly raising the profile of WLNY.”

In addition to their new responsibilities on Live from the Couch, Elliott and Kerney will continue to appear on CBS 2 News This Morning, weekdays from 4:30–7:00 on WCBS/Channel 2. Elliott has served as weekday morning weathercaster since January 2007. He will remain on the WCBS noon newscast, and still provide daytime reports for sister station WCBS 880.
