The New York Times is love struck. Today the paper ran yet another gushing piece about Chris Hughes (and his husband, Sean Eldridge), the co-founder of Facebook and editor and publisher of The New Republic. You can practically feel the Emoji hearts emanating from it.
This isn’t to say that we fault the Times. You cannot help who you love, love is blind, I’m here for the right reasons, etc. We just wish the Times would come out and admit its feelings, which would make it less awkward for the rest of us.
Haven’t noticed the Times’ constant mentioning of Hughes? Here are just a few examples.

No doubt the weekend of lavish festivities, including a rehearsal dinner at Per Se, an intimate wedding at the couple’s home in Garrison, N.Y., and a reception that evening at Cipriani Wall Street — orchestrated by Bryan Rafanelli, who also planned Chelsea Clinton’s wedding — would have been hard to switch.
Notice that tinge of jealousy from the Times? Per Se, huh? Oh, how original. Chelsea Clinton’s wedding planner? Wake me when you join the 21st century.
Mr. Hughes said he is prepared for the remaking of the magazine [The New Republic] to take years, a sign that he views it as a ‘long-term investment.’ Making a profit, he said, is not an immediate concern. Mr. Hughes left Facebook in 2007 with a fortune estimated by Forbes at $700 million.
This is a man who has admirable goals and is able to say he doesn’t care about money because he has a shit ton of it. Keeper.
The 4,000-square-foot loft he [Eldridge] and Mr. Hughes own has become a hub of fund-raising receptions attended by major Democrats like Senator Kirsten Gillibrand of New York and Representative Nancy Pelosi of California, the House minority leader. For the White House Correspondents Dinner in Washington in April, Mr. Eldridge and Mr. Hughes were A-list invitees, appearing at the Vanity Fair-Bloomberg party at the French ambassador’s residence, which also drew Barbra Streisand.
Nothing goes better with old, rich white people than the Times.
Despite his blond, good-looking boyishness, he had as much if not more confidence as any pinstripe-suited aging editor drinking Bellinis at Cipriani that night..
The Times is never leaving Sexy Island.
Even Mr. Hughes’s presumed rivals seem to welcome competition in an industry rife with layoffs, declining advertising and an unclear future.
No one hates dimples!
He graduated magna cum laude from Harvard. He founded Facebook with Mark Zuckerberg, Dustin Moskovitz and Eduardo Saverin. Mr. Hughes also led the online organizing for Barack Obama’s 2008 presidential campaign.
To recap, Hughes throws great parties, is rich, smart, successful, hot, hot and hot. How can the Times resist?
