Lowell Thomas Travel Journalism Competition: Lowell Thomas Bronze Medal for Best Travel Guidebook (Shared, 2008): John contributed to Fodor's The Complete Guide to National Parks of the West (1st edition), which won this award. Montana Newspaper Association: First Place, Spot News Reporting (Shared, 2005): John and a colleague placed for their multistory coverage of a balcony collapse in Polson, Montana. New England Press Association: First Place, Feature Photo (1995): John won for a Cape Cod Times front-page photo taken in Woods Hole, MA.
