"I have worked with and known John Blodgett for 20 years. In that time, I have been impressed with his dedication to craft, willingness to follow assignments (and cheerfully accept edits or revisions), tenacity at getting details right, and the general sensitivity of his work. John routinely meets deadlines, provides accurate progress updates, and invariably impresses the sources and subjects with whom he works. I would not hesitate to recommend him for any assignment." Barry Scholl, former editor, Salt Lake, Utah Outdoors, and Utah Business "John Blodgett is a true professional who is both a solid reporter and a meticulous writer. He is a quick study and always turns out reliable, interesting copy on deadline. John has a great attitude and makes the most of any assignment." Frank Miele, managing editor, Daily Inter Lake

Newspaper Reporting

The scene was reminiscent of countless American childhoods.
Becky Dell went to hell for summer vacation. It wasn't the first time for the middle school teacher, and if history is any indication, it won't be the last.
There is no beer in beer pong when played according to official rules. You heard correctly: No beer. Official rules.
It's 9 a.m. at the Spinnaker in Lakeside. A group of older men sit around two tables. They talk, they laugh, they drink coffee, they roll dice to see who pays the bill. It's been like this for almost 30 years.
Fire destroyed a home on Many Lakes Drive Friday, but not the spirit of the homeowner. "I just had open heart surgery a few weeks ago," said Sam Hanson with a grim smile as he watched his house burn in front of him. "So I don't worry about this s-."
There are some who believe the Alta Club's reputation is in the crapper. The main floor men's bathroom, to be precise.
At 4 a.m. one morning in January 2000, the lights in Bob White's hospital room in Kalispell went on. Ol' Doc Williams walked in, presumably to see how Bob was doing. At the age of 70, his heart had been giving him some problems. Doc Williams sat down on the bed. "Now about this wooden boat."
Something was wrong: the falcon aerie was eerily quiet.
Laurie Bakewell and Nancy Derrick had prime seats Saturday, Sept. 19, for Ontario's Route 66 Cruisin' Reunion car show - in the back of Bakewell's husband's 1966 Pontiac GTO convertible.
It's been a few years since Jack Whitney has wielded a bow - many more since he last used one to bring down a cougar with a handmade arrow - but three bows, made by hand about 50 years ago, stand in the corner near his back door.

Images taken while on assignment or during personal explorations.
How a cheap plastic toy camera rejuvenated my photography.
Self-conscious of his weight, Brian Perry rarely leaves the fantasy kingdom he created in a windowless warehouse.
As she grapples with self-acceptance, Teresa Highbarger wishes others could see beyond her size.

James LeVoy Sorenson wants to achieve world peace by reuniting the family of man through molecular science. Don't laugh. He's serious.
My terror was as sheer as the slot canyon walls above us. Before Amber and me, between sandstone and a boulder, was a narrow crack that defied ascension.
One day in Aug. 1985, William "Bill" Lowman, executive director of Idyllwild School of Music and the Arts, and Richard Richardson, development director, got into Richardson's car and started the drive off The Hill. To Lowman, the school's future - the survival of its founders' dream - was at stake.
Envisioning a mathematician at the forefront of climate change research is not a stretch of the imagination...What is surprising is that this particular mathematician, Ken Golden, has become a field scientist with no formal training, and his field is the polar sea ice packs.
