Professional Experience

Healthcare -- it's big, it's complicated, but don't make the mistake of thinking it's dull. In the right hands, the drama of who gets healthcare, who doesn't and how we pay for it is as compelling as it gets. I've been writing about the confluence of the healthcare business and regular people's lives for the last 10 years. My stories explaining medical science, consumer health and the vagaries of the healthcare system have been read by daily newspaper readers, surfers seeking online health advice, hospital trustees and administrators and people picking up consumer magazines at the supermarket checkout line. My unique blend of the business and consumer sides of healthcare lets me drill down to what really matters to the reader. I've thrived as a freelancer for the past nine years by understanding the importance of deadlines, turning in clean copy and acting like a mature professional. I've been a newspaper and magazine writer for 25 years, with two book projects under my belt.

Hospitals facing the decision whether to inoculate their staffs for smallpox go down different roads.
There are now three generations of nurses working side-by-side in hospitals, and they don't always get along. Older nurses have devoted their lives to the job, while Generation Xers believe in a more balanced lifestyle. Who's going to take that extra shift?

columns

In this column I wrote for the local newspaper between 2002 and 2005, I explored life as the mother of a young child.

book excerpt

This is an excerpt from a book I wrote in 2005 for the Dotter Interventional Institute in Portland, Oregon, detailing the institute's history. This section describes Charles Dotter, a pioneer in interventional radiology, who practiced at Oregon Health and Science University for several decades.
