Professional Experience

A decade of experience as both a freelance sportswriter and television/sports business research professional, I have always blended both passions into my work. I am a senior writer for The Sports Fan Journal, a daily digital publication which features writers who are published at ESPN, Rolling Stone, SBNation, FOX Sports and others. Spent eight years with the New York Beacon, an African-American weekly newspaper, including seven seasons as the beat reporter for the New York Giants and four as the beat reporter for the New York Yankees. I have also spent 5 1/2 years in media research; two years for a media planning and buying agency, one year in cable ad sales research and 2 1/2 years in broadcast network program research.

Showcase

Sports and Society

In the aftermath of the grand jury decision of no indictment in the Eric Garner case, I discussed the sports world's on-field responses, which were inspired by the larger public outcry.

Sports Analysis

Earlier in during the 2014 NFL season, I published an analysis on games where the margin of victory were 20 or more points, deeming those games uncompetitive. Prior to the playoffs, I compiled the full season's box scores for historical context. Features three infographics.

Sports History

This is an interview with Claude Johnson, the executive director of the Black Fives Foundation. The foundation showcased an exhibit at the New York Historical Society that featured a glimpse into the black barnstormers who dominated basketball before the NBA's formation.

Sports and Media

An interview of noted sports media analyst and Sporting News contributor, Paulsen, who published a study of the demographics in sports television viewership.
The discussion of media market sizes during nationally televised games, more often than not, reinforces some inaccurate perceptions about some teams and/or players. Having those beliefs may cause viewers to behave in a manner that actually makes the expectation come true.
For at least a decade, a debate has raged about the dwindling participation of African-Americans in baseball. Here, I looked at an overlooked culprit; the lack of television viewership among African-Americans.
