Anthrax Founder Scott Ian to Pen Memoir For Perseus

scottianScott Ian, founding member of the thrash band Anthrax, has signed a book deal with Da Capo Press, a Perseus Books Group imprint. Perseus will publish Ian’s memoir I’m the Man next year.

“Why a book? Because I think my story can connect with anyone and, if I was able to make the life I wanted for myself happen, then anyone can,” said Ian in a statement. “I’m really excited to be writing a book because the idea of getting forty-something years of stuff out of my brain and onto the page seems very therapeutic. Plus if I didn’t do it now, I’d start forgetting and wouldn’t be able to share all these killer stories with you, my friends!”

Ben Schafer, executive editor at Da Capo acquired the world rights to the book from Jim Fitzgerald of the James Fitzgerald Agency.

NaNoWriMo Tip #18: Drink Some Coffee

nanowrimoNational Novel Writing Month (NaNoWriMo) is slowly coming to an end, as writers around the globe try to finish a 50,000-word novel draft in a single month.

To help the GalleyCat readers taking this challenge, we will be offering NaNoWriMo advice throughout the month. Last year, 341,375 participants wrote a novel in 30 days through the NaNoWriMo program. The writing marathon has generated more than 250 traditionally published novels, according to the organizers.

Our eighteenth tip is: Drink Some Coffee. It’s been a long month but there are still a few days left and you may still have a lot to get done. Take a break. Pour yourself a cup of coffee, or tea or other drink that gets you going. Now return to your writing and go for it. You can do it!

J.R.R. Tolkien Biopic in the Pipeline

11538Fox Searchlight plans to create a biopic profiling world renowned author, J.R.R. Tolkien. According to The L.A. Times, the movie will explore Tolkien’s childhood, his time in the military, and his writing career.

Scholar David Gleeson will pen the script. Peter Chernin has signed on as a producer. Which actor would you cast to play the creator behind The Lord of the Rings book trilogy? Here’s more from the article:

“There’s been no definitive biopic of Tolkien, though several stalled-in-development attempts in recent years, including Mirkwood, a fantastical look at his work as a codebreaker during WWII. That project ran into obstacles from the very private Tolkien estate (it’s unknown to what extent they wiill be cooperating on Gleeson’s movie). If audiences love for Tolkien’s work is any indication, though, filmmakers on Tolkien will have a popular subject on their hands: Movies based on Tolkien’s literary output, including Jackson’s LOTR series, have grossed nearly $4 billion around the world, with “Smaug” expected to add significantly to that total.”

Harry Potter Alliance Launches ‘Hunger Games’-Themed Social Justice Campaign

The Harry Potter Alliance has launched a Hunger Games-themed social justice campaign called “Odds In Our Favor.”

This nonprofit organization has created a video called “The Hunger Games Are Real.” Throughout the video (embedded above), the narrator refers to events which take place in Suzanne Collins’ young adult trilogy and shares statistics concerning poverty, hunger, and income equality within the United States. What do you think?

In a L.A. Times op-ed, Harry Potter Alliance executive director Andrew Slack writes: “Perhaps Lionsgate will embrace the simple but radical message of its blockbuster films: No one should have to go hungry in a nation of plenty. After all, fantasy is not an escape from our world but an invitation to go deeper into it. And we will keep going deeper until the odds are in everyone’s favor.” (via Upworthy)
