Iain Banks Has Died

Novelist Iain M. Banks has passed away.

The Friends of Iain Banks website offered this brief message:

“Iain died in the early hours this morning. His death was calm and without pain.” We will update this site shortly. Please leave messages here, he absolutely loved them. For now, a fond farewell to our friend.

The writer revealed his battle with terminal cancer earlier this year. His final novel, The Quarry, will be published later this month.

Banks has published numerous books in a variety of genres, including his science fiction Culture series. In a final message to his friends, he wrote:

I want to say thank you to all of you for your messages, your memories, your wit, your sympathy and your kind, supportive thoughts. It means a lot, almost more than I can say, and – whatever type or size of screen I read the comments on – I come away from the computer, laptop, iPad or phone with a happy smile on my face.
