The Winners of the LA Times’ 34th Annual Book Prize

latimesThe Los Angeles Times  hosted its 34th Annual Book Prizes ceremony over the weekend, honoring 50 writers in 10 categories for their 2013 books. The Times’ book critic David L. Ulin hosted the event at at the University of Southern California’s Bovard Auditorium.

Atlantic Records Hosts Instagram Contest For ‘The Fault in Our Stars’ Movie Soundtrack

tfioscoverWant to contribute a few words to music video for The Fault in Our Stars soundtrack?

Author John Green announced on his blog that Atlantic Records is accepting instagram pieces with “a word or phrase of encouragement.” The organizers behind this contest “will pick their favorite entries and include them in the music video.”

To participate, all images must feature the #TFiOSencouragements hashtag in the description. Thus far, more than two dozen people have sent in submissions. A deadline has been set for April 11, 2014.

John Green to Serve as Executive Producer For ‘Paper Towns’ Film Adaptation

paper townsLast night, young adult novelist John Green announced on Twitter and Facebook that Fox 2000 has acquired the film rights to his 2008 book, Paper Towns.

Green confirmed that the screenwriters and producers behind The Fault in Our Stars movie will reunite for this adaptation project. He also revealed that he will serve as an executive producer so “if you don’t like something, you can blame me.”

Nat Wolff, the actor who plays Isaac in The Fault in Our Stars, sent out a tweet that he is “excited” have the lead role in Paper TownsDeadline reports that “Paper Towns takes place in Orlando, but this is far from a Disney World ride. The protagonist is Quentin, a young man who shared a jarring experience with his neighbor Margo: They found a man who committed suicide.”

John Green Appears On ‘Teens React’ YouTube Series

Benny and Rafi Fine, the creators of TheFineBros YouTube channel, taped an episode of “Teens React” featuring The Fault in Our Stars movie trailer (embedded above).

During the question time segment, young adult novelist John Green made a surprise appearance via video chat. During his conversation with one of the teens, Green revealed that he has seen the film in its entirety and he feels it is a faithful adaptation. What do you think?

Rodrigo Corral Designs Cover For The Mountain Goats Rocker John Darnielle

John Darnielle, best known for being a member of The Mountain Goats band, has signed a deal with Farrar, Straus & Giroux to pen his novel. The publisher will release Wolf in White Van on September 30, 2014.

The Fault in Our Stars novelist John Green holds The Mountain Goats in high regard. Back in January 2013, they performed alongside Green and his brother Hank during their “Evening of Awesome” event at Carnegie Hall.

VIDEO: Hank Green Rants About Books

Hank Green, brother to The Fault in Our Stars novelist John Green and one half of the creators behind the Vlogbrothers YouTube Channel, has created a video called “Ranting about Books.”

In the video embedded above, Green shares his complaints on the way books are being published. Some of his gripes include:

    • Sharing spoilers on the jacket flap copy.
    • Not explicitly printing the series title for books that belong in a series.
    • Book covers featuring “decapitated YA fiction ladies.”

‘The Fault in Our Stars’ Movie Trailer Released

20th Century Fox has released the first official trailer for The Fault in Our Stars film adaptation. We’ve embedded the video above–what do you think?

A short clip from the movie was also showcased on The Today Show earlier this morning. Author John Green sent out a tweet not long after that airing to assure his fans that a full trailer will be available “online soonish.”

Dan Brown’s ‘Inferno’ Was The Bestselling Book of 2013: USA Today

inferno304Dan Brown‘s Inferno was the bestselling book of 2013, according to USA Today‘s Bestsellers list which tracked book sales in the US from Dec. 31, 2012-Dec. 29, 2013.

Divergent by Veronica Roth was No. 2 on the list. Diary of a Wimpy Kid: Hard Luck by Jeff Kinney reached No. 3 on the list. Safe Haven by Nicholas Sparks was No. 4 and The Fault in Our Stars by John Green was the No. 5 bestselling book of the year.

Of the best sellers tracked by USA TODAY each week, 80% were fiction. That’s the highest since the list was begun in 1993, breaking 2011′s record of 78%. The top non-fiction book of 2013 at No. 9 was Killing Jesus by Bill O’Reilly and Martin Dugard. Their 2012 book, Killing Kennedy, continued to sell last year, finishing at No. 61.
