From humble beginnings at smalltime gigs in Brooklyn to performing in front of stadium-sized crowds, Andrew Dice Clay roared to fame in the 1980s, becoming the only comedian to sell out Madison Square Garden two nights in a row. David Ritz: ‘Write the book you would want to read, not the one you believe you should write’

David Ritz has had a successful ghostwriting career, collaborating with everyone from Ray Charles to Joe Perry, and written quite a few novels too. In the latest installment of Mediabistro’s Hey, How’d You Do That? series, the prolific writer tells how he landed some of his biggest clients, and how gives tips for aspiring ghostwriters.

“When I first met Ray Charles, I didn’t know about ghostwriting; I was just going to do a biography of him,” Ritz recalled. “And then his agent asked me, ‘Which book would you be more interested in reading: a book about Ray Charles written by an egghead or a book written in his own voice?’ I told him that I would much rather read the book written in his own voice, and he told me, ‘You should write the book you would want to read, not the one you believe you should write.’ And that was a big turning point for me.”

Etta James Has Died

Music legend and author Etta James has passed away. She was 73 years old.

In the video embedded above, James sang her classic tune, “At Last.” In 1995, she co-wrote a memoir with David Ritz, a book called Rage To Survive: The Etta James Story. Follow this link to read excerpts from her memoir.

Here’s one review of her book: “This is a personal testament to one woman’s struggle to survive. Etta doesn’t seem to leave much out, but she’s largely non-judgemental, both about her own failings and those of others. She tells of her own demons and how self-doubt and her heroin addiction threatened to destroy her, but she never descends into self-pity. There are numerous stories about those she has known and worked with, including Johnny Otis, Little Richard, Chuck Berry, Sam Cooke, Aretha Franklin, Ray Charles, Esther Phillips and Bo Diddley.”
