Business Book of the Year Award Shortlist

Need a good business book? The Financial Times and Goldman Sachs revealed the shortlist for the annual Financial Times and Goldman Sachs Business Book of the Year Award.

The finalists for the 33rd annual Los Angeles Times Book Prize have been revealed, and we’ve collected free samples of all their books below–some of the best books released in 2012. Here’s more about the awards:

“The winners of the L.A. Times book prizes will be announced at an awards ceremony April 19, the evening before the L.A. Times Festival of Books, April 20-21. Held on USC’s campus in Bovard Auditorium, the awards are open to the public; tickets will be made available in late March.”

Steve Coll Wins the 2012 Financial Times and Goldman Sachs Business Book of the Year Award

Two-time Pulitzer Prize winner Steve Coll won the 2012 Financial Times and Goldman Sachs Business Book of the Year for his book, Private Empire: ExxonMobil and American Power.

Follow the links below to read free samples of the shortlisted business books. The winner was unveiled at the award dinner at The Mandarin Oriental Hotel in New York. Coll earned a £30,000 (about $48,711) prize, and the other shortlisted authors received £10,000 (about $16,237).

Here’s more from the release: “The book is a hard-hitting investigation of the notoriously secretive ExxonMobil Corporation, beginning with the Exxon Valdez accident in 1989 and closing with the Deepwater Horizon oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico in 2010.”

Steve Coll Lands Deal for Ghost Wars Sequel

Author Steve Coll is leaving the New America Foundation later this year to focus on writing the sequel to his Pulitzer Prize-winning book, Ghost Wars: The Secret History of the CIA, Afghanistan, and Bin Laden, from the Soviet Invasion to September 10, 2001.

The president of the public policy institute landed on Amazon’s best books of the year so far list for his new book, Private Empire: ExxonMobil and American Power. His current publisher Penguin Press will release the Ghost Wars sequel, but no publication date has been revealed yet.

Coll explained in The Huffington Post: “The first book ended on September 10, 2001. For a while I resisted taking on a second volume that would start with the attacks because I wasn’t sure where the ending would be. Now that the United States has set 2014 as an end to combat operations in Afghanistan, I think I can see how to try a second volume that is very much located in the subjects and narrative approaches of the first.”

Amazon Editors Pick the 20 Best Books of 2012 So Far

Today Amazon editors revealed their picks for the best books of the year so far. The top ten books on the list were all published by the Big Six publishers–no Amazon Publishing, indie presses or self-published titles.

The editors also picked their top ten books in all the popular categories: biographies & memoirs, business & investing, cookbooks, food & wine, crafts, hobbies & home, literature & fiction, mystery & thrillers, nonfiction, romance, science fiction & fantasy, comics & graphic novels, and teens,  middle grade and picture books for kids.
