Santa Monica Studio is seeking a Contract Cinematic Artist for an upcoming new title. If you enjoy collaborating with talented developers to build genre-defining games, join us on this new journey!
The Contract Cinematic Artist will contribute to the project vision by utilizing camera composition and cinematic motion to present character performances and story beats. Candidates should have experience in prototyping, developing, and implementing animated cameras, balancing narrative goals with technical constraints, and a proven track record from concept to completion.
This role involves working closely with directors, leads, artists, and designers to deliver visually stunning camera work that supports the narrative of a large-scale new project.
The ideal candidate has held a junior or mid-level role on at least one published title, has a strong understanding of cinematic language, is proficient in Maya and MotionBuilder, and has experience with multiple game engines and animation systems. A passion for cinematography and the ability to combine creativity with technical skills to deliver compelling in-game narratives are essential.
Responsibilities
- Assist the Narrative team with script breakdowns, scene staging, and layout.
- Support live action and 3D pre-visualization efforts.
- Operate virtual cameras during motion capture shoots.
- Process and clean camera data post-shoot.
- Animate focus pulling and depth of field for cinematics.
- Hand-animate cameras for cinematics and narrative moments.
- Support motion capture shoots, ensuring prop needs and continuity.
- Provide feedback to outsourcing teams.
- Facilitate requests regarding animated cameras.
- Keep updated on industry trends, software, and traditional art methods.
Requirements
- Degree in fine arts or relevant field, or equivalent skills.
- 1-3 years of industry or related experience.
- A demo reel demonstrating strong cinematography fundamentals.
- Background in photography or cinematography.
- Ability to convey framing ideas via storyboards.
- Proficiency in Maya.
- Comfort with learning animation systems and game engine pipelines.
- Ability to prototype and explore shot approaches rapidly.
- Strong teamwork, communication, and organizational skills.
- Enthusiasm for innovation and new ideas.
Preferred Experience
- AAA game experience.
- Experience with MotionBuilder.
- Scripting knowledge.
- Experience with proprietary animation tools.
- Experience in martial arts, acting, or dance.
