Position Description

The Custodian position located with the Nashville Public Library performs a variety of cleaning and service tasks to keep public grounds and buildings clean, orderly, and maintained. Performs related duties as required. Position may require weekend work.

Employees in this position may be required to travel to various locations to perform assigned duties. Work environment involves moderate risks or discomforts which require special safety precautions, e.g., working under extreme outdoor weather conditions, working around moving parts, carts, or machines, irritant chemicals, etc. May be required to use protective clothing or gear such as masks, coats, goggles, gloves, or shields. Some physical exertion such as walking, climbing, bending, stooping, stretching, or similar activities required. We have job openings at the Main Library and Branch Services.

Typical Duties

  • Cleans and maintains public buildings, including stripping, waxing and buffing floors.

  • Sweeps and mops halls, rooms, rest rooms, stairways, and other public areas.

  • Cleans and maintains all floors, carpets, furniture, and fixtures.

  • Washes windows, walls, blinds, rails, and air vents.

  • Performs minor building and fixture repairs.

  • Sanitizes, cleans, and restocks rest rooms.

  • Removes all litter and debris from the ground; including emptying trash containers.

  • Salts and shovels snow and ice.

  • Keeps outside area in good repair.

  • Prepares rooms for meetings and special events.

  • Checks for signs of break-ins or attempted break-ins and vandalism.

  • May move, load or unload heavy objects, supplies or other materials.

Minimum Qualifications

Eighth Grade Education and (3) years of general custodial or maintenance experience.

License Required:

Valid Driver License may be required for some positions in this classification.

Candidates with accreditations earned in a foreign institute are encouraged to apply.

Note: Per Metro Ordinance No. SO94-1078. All employees of the Metropolitan Government shall be residents of the State of Tennessee or become residents of the state within six (6) months of employment as a prerequisite to employment with the Metropolitan Government.

Preferred Experience, Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Experience with equipment, materials and methods used in custodial work

  • Experience ordering and maintaining adequate supplies

  • Skill in the use of cleaning and/or lawn care equipment

  • Ability to follow oral and written instructions

  • Bilingual language skills
