Speech Communication Adjunct Instructor Duties and Responsibilities

  1. Teach classes as assigned in accordance with SAE policies and procedures.
  2. Deliver instruction aligned with the Student-Centered Active Education model.
  3. Establish a classroom environment conducive to learning and engagement.
  4. Participate in academic advising, curriculum development, and support campus events such as workshops, orientations, and graduation.
  5. Manage the learning environment by maintaining attendance records, submitting grades on time, and enforcing policies.
  6. Plan and prepare for classes, developing activities that support learning outcomes.
  7. Support absent and high-risk students through contact and documentation.
  8. Complete annual faculty development to improve instructional skills and support diverse learners.
  9. Maintain instructor eligibility per regulations.
  10. For full-time instructors: supervise makeup sessions, provide tutoring and advising, support faculty activities, and substitute as needed.
  11. Perform other duties as assigned.

Speech Communication Adjunct Instructor Essential Skills, Knowledge, and Experience

For General Education courses: A master's degree with 18 semester credits or 24 quarter credits in the course area. For example, teaching College Mathematics requires 18 graduate credits in Mathematics, even if the degree is in another field.

For program courses towards a Diploma or Associate’s Degree:

  • A bachelor’s degree; if not in the teaching field, a credential in the field at or above the program level.
  • At least 4 years of industry experience post-degree.
  • Rarely, extensive work experience without a degree may be temporarily accepted with progress toward a degree.

For program courses towards a Bachelor’s degree:

  • A master’s degree; if not in the teaching field, a credential at or above the program level.
  • At least 4 years of industry experience post-degree.
  • Rare exceptions may be granted with demonstrated progress towards a master’s degree.
  • Familiarity with Canvas LMS.
  • Knowledge of learner-centered, active, problem-based, and project-based teaching methodologies.
  • Advanced skills in Google Sheets and Microsoft Excel.

Additional Information and Physical Requirements

This is a part-time, onsite, campus-based position. Physical requirements include sitting and standing for extended periods, handling files and papers, occasional lifting up to 25 pounds, moving within the organization, and using a computer for prolonged periods.
