Scope of Job

The Department of Creative Writing Program seeks candidates for our Graduate Assistant Instructor program. Candidates must be accepted in the MFA in Creative Writing Program, have completed 18 credit hours in the program, and be in good standing. They must demonstrate a commitment to working in collaboration with their faculty supervisor(s) and other graduate assistants. Graduate Assistant Instructors will also complete all trainings for employment and take an approved pedagogy course from our degree plan if they have not already. In the application, please mention previous teaching and/or creative writing workshop experience, relevant graduate coursework in more than one genre of creative writing, pedagogy course or related trainings completed or forthcoming, and other relevant information valued in teaching creative writing such as creative writing publications, presentations/performances, and/or works-in-progress.

Graduate Assistant Instructor duties include teaching, as the instructor of record, undergraduate creative writing courses (in-person and/or online). In particular, we are seeking instructors for ENGL 2316 Poetry Appreciation and ENGL 3351 Creative Writing I courses with the possibility of ENGL 3352 Creative Nonfiction. Duties include designing your syllabus in consultation with a Creative Writing faculty mentor and/or the department chair, leading class discussions and pedagogically engaging activities, teaching the process of creative writing, maintaining effective communication with the class on Brightspace, evaluating student creative writing and classwork, holding office hours and meeting with students to assist them with their creative writing, and all other duties required of instructors of record. GAI’s are also required to attend weekly meetings with their supervisor(s) and they may also need to complete other department-related duties as assigned.

- Be in good academic standing

- Hold a bachelor’s degree or higher appropriate to the area of service

- Be registered full-time for the respective semester—nine (9) semester credit hours during the fall semester, nine (9) semester credit hours during the spring semester, three (3) semester credit hours during the summer session, or be registered in the required number of semester credit hours to fulfill the only remaining requirements of the degree plan.
