Position Summary Private voice/piano/guitar/drum instructor for a music academy geared toward students of all ages in Orange County. The Music Instructor will work with The Salvation Army music school director to schedule teaching days and engage with children and adults.
Pay Range and Hours This is a part-time position, requiring 3-15 hours per week depending on student enrollment and teacher schedule. Pay is $30-$36 per hour, DOE.
Essential Functions Planning and preparing lessons based on students’ needs, aims, and abilities.
Acquiring teaching materials and resources.
Teaching music theory, listening skills, and practical musicianship.
Preparing students for practice, recitals, and performances.
Motivating students and encouraging progress in a positive environment.
Communicating with parents and music school leads.
Planning and/or arranging recitals and concerts for students’ families and friends.
Being responsible for musical instruments and the teaching environment.
Working Conditions Ability to sit for long periods with breaks, and walk, stand, bend, squat, climb, kneel, and twist on an intermittent or continuous basis. Ability to grasp, push, and pull objects such as files and file cabinet drawers. Ability to operate a computer and telephone. Ability to lift up to 25 lbs.
Minimum Qualifications EDUCATION – AA or BA degree in Music preferred. Equivalent knowledge and experience are highly considered.
EXPERIENCE – Three years of teaching experience preferred.
Demonstrate practical and theoretical knowledge of music performance and teaching. Communicate instrumental and vocal techniques to students in a positive learning environment.
Bilingual/Bi-literate English/Spanish is a plus.
Skills, Knowledge & Abilities Teaching
Instrumental proficiency, technique, music theory, reading, and writing music notation
Organization and time management
Ability to communicate and relate well with students, parents, co-workers, and community members
Ability to work flexible hours including evenings and some weekends
A criminal background check is required with certification for Protect the Mission policies and procedures.
Must be dependable, able to communicate effectively, problem solve, plan, organize, think critically, work well alone and with others, and be a team player.
