Overview
Library Assistant whose duties include the following: Under the supervision of the Supervisor of Circulation or delegate, performs duties related to the routine operations of the Library’s central circulation activities.

Special Library Assistant II, Circulation
Responsibilities
Scope of Responsibility: Under immediate supervision and in accordance with standard policy and practices, performs duties including:
- Greeting and directing library patrons in person, over the phone, and electronically, providing simple directions and information.
- Participating in operations such as charging and discharging materials, receiving and recording fines, processing reserves, registering borrowers, issuing library cards, maintaining patron records, and addressing customer service issues. Communicating library policies professionally and courteously.
- Identifying, referring problems, and suggesting solutions to supervisors.
- Sorting, shelving, and preparing periodicals and newspapers for circulation, discard, or storage.
- Booking museum passes and instructing the public on booking software.
- Handling requests, maintaining reserve shelves, and retrieving materials from closed stacks.
- Processing books and materials, verifying locations, and searching shelves as needed.
- Completing forms and assisting with clerical duties.
- Preparing activity reports and maintaining statistical records.
- Performing equipment maintenance and troubleshooting.
- Maintaining an orderly appearance of public information areas and sorting mail.
- Attending training sessions as directed.
- Performing related work as required.
Minimum Entrance Qualifications
- High School Graduate or equivalent.
- No experience required.
- Appropriate demeanor for a public service environment.
- Good communication skills and tact.
- Professional appearance and manner.
- Good judgment and dependability.
- Ability to use a keyboard.
- Ability to accept responsibility and work cooperatively.
- Proficiency with MS Word and Excel.
- Initiative and effective communication skills.
- Ability to collaborate with staff and the public.
- Attention to detail.
- Must clear a Criminal Offenders Record Information check with the City of Boston.
