Position Overview:
Under the direction of the Reader Services Supervisor or delegate and within the framework of Library policies and practices, to participate in reference service to the public and perform any or all phases of work in support of collection development. The work also includes the performance of various tasks requiring the successful application of the knowledge of professional literature, bibliographic sources, and principles of information delivery and services.
Responsibilities
- Provides reference service to the public in various methods and locations, responding to information requests using resources in all formats.
- Engages with the reading community about books in all formats; assists readers in content identification; participates in readers’ advisory services both in person and online; develops booklists and recommendation tools.
- Assists patrons in using the Library’s resources through consultations, instruction, programs, and online content.
- Selects materials within assigned areas for all Boston Public Library locations, based on reviews and requests.
- Supports collection development activities, including creating electronic order lists and communicating collection information to staff.
- Provides instruction on library resources, technology, and personal development topics, both informally and through programs.
- Participates in developing and presenting programming to promote reader’s advisory services.
- Prepares reports and participates in bibliographic projects, online lists, and resource guides.
- Expands knowledge of library resources and assists with collection maintenance activities.
- Recommends improvements for services, operations, and collections.
- Develops online services that enhance access and knowledge sharing.
- Maintains knowledge of reading devices and publishing trends.
- Participates in professional activities and system-wide committees.
- Performs other related duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree and a master's degree in library and information science from an ALA-accredited program.
- Relevant library experience or equivalent education, training, and skills.
- Proficiency with MS Word, Publisher, PowerPoint, and Excel.
- Ability to plan, supervise, and execute library policies and projects.
- Effective communication, creativity, flexibility, and collaboration skills.
- Knowledge of bibliographical tools and resources.
- Availability for evening and weekend hours and ability to travel as needed.
- Must pass a Criminal Offenders Record Information check.
