The successful candidate will be responsible for reviewing, editing, and improving technical documents, research papers, articles, and other content related to science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM). The role will involve ensuring clarity, accuracy, and coherence in written materials, adhering to specific style guides, and facilitating clear communication of complex technical information. Editor will provide the clarity, coherence, and quality of research documents, adhering to academic and publication standards. The editor will work closely with faculty in matters concerning style and format to ensure consistency and quality of written materials to be submitted for courses and publications in print or online. This position is essential in the support in the development, editing, and publication of research documents.
Responsibilities:
- Develop relationships with faculty members and/or program directors to establish ideal approaches to meet students’ writing needs, will serve a diverse community of students, including students not writing in their native language(s), and will assist all students in improving their writing, particularly at the masters and doctoral level with both qualitative and quantitative research studies.
- Meeting with graduate administration to ensure writing styles and corrections are in-line with BSU Graduate School writing guidelines.
- Assures the successful completion of student documents consistent with established guidelines by organizing writing assignments in accordance to set conciseness, style, and terminology.
- Supports the Graduate Resource Center by maintaining a project log of documents, other records, and files and working with other staff members as part of a team.
- Content Review and Editing:
- Review and edit technical documents for clarity, grammar, punctuation, and adherence to style guidelines.
- Ensure accuracy and consistency in terminology and data presented.
- Verify factual information and check for logical flow and coherence in the content.
- Technical Accuracy:
- Collaborate with subject matter experts to ensure the technical accuracy of content.
- Cross-reference and validate data, calculations, and experimental results.
- Formatting and Style:
- Apply appropriate formatting and style guidelines (e.g., APA, IEEE, Chicago) to documents.
- Standardize headings, tables, figures, and references according to specific guidelines.
- Content Development:
- Assist in the development and structuring of technical content for clarity and readability.
- Provide constructive feedback to authors and researchers to improve their writing skills.
- Project Management:
- Manage multiple editing projects simultaneously, ensuring timely delivery of edited materials.
- Coordinate with authors, researchers, and other stakeholders to meet deadlines.
- Quality Assurance:
- Conduct final reviews of documents to ensure they meet quality standards before publication.
- Implement and maintain best practices for technical editing and documentation.
- Collaboration:
- Work closely with interdisciplinary teams including scientists, engineers, and IT professionals.
- Participate in meetings and discussions to understand project requirements and objectives.
- Deliver graduate student writing services and resources, including writing style workshops, dissertation editing services, etc.
- Professional Development:
- Stay current with best practices in graduate education and student services.
- Attend relevant conferences, workshops, and training sessions.
- Network with other professionals in the field to exchange ideas and resources.
Minimum Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree required. Minimum of five years related work experience with editing and writing in a university setting.
- Strong command of the English language, with excellent grammar and writing skills.
- Proven experience in technical writing or editing.
- Familiarity with various style guides (e.g., APA, IEEE, Chicago).
- Proficient in using editing tools and software (e.g., MS Word, LaTeX, Adobe Acrobat).
- Strong understanding of academic writing conventions and research methodologies.
- Attention to detail and ability to work with complex technical information.
- Strong organizational and time management skills.
- Experience with content management systems and document collaboration tools.

Preferred Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in a STEM field (e.g., Physics, Engineering, Computer Science, Mathematics).
- 5 years of experience in a professional position writing, editing, and formatting academic materials
- Experience with reference management tools is a plus.
- Prior experience in academic editing or publishing is preferred.
