Under supervision, the Library Specialist performs para-professional library work assisting with planning, organizing, implementing, and promoting special programs, events, and exhibits presented by the Library. Work also involves assisting library patrons and maintaining library materials and records. Employee must exercise tact and courtesy in all contacts with library patrons.
Reports to the Director of Library Services or designated Library Coordinator.
Hiring salary: $37,144 Depending on Qualifications
- Assists with planning, organizing, implementing, and promoting special programs, events, and exhibits; as assigned, serves as lead for these activities. May serve as lead for specific program areas.
- Performs tasks at the circulation desks and/or bookmobile; checks library materials in and out; registers patrons for library cards; maintains records and tabulations. Collects fines for overdue and lost materials, and other miscellaneous fees (copier, fax machine, printer).
- Answers phone, opens and closes the library on a rotating shift, and provides technical assistance to patrons using library computers, printers, copiers, and other public equipment.
- Performs reference tasks such as instructing readers in the use of reference tools, including computers, and answering reference questions on historical, cultural, or genealogical topics.
- Collects books and other materials from the book depository, inspects returned items for damage.
- Prepares carts for shelving and regularly shelves books and reads shelves.
- Attends seminars and workshops relevant to library services.
- Trains and oversees volunteers as directed.
- May operate County vehicle to retrieve and distribute inter-office mail, deposit monies, and transport library materials and supplies between County libraries.
- Performs other duties as assigned.

- Possession of a high school diploma/GED supplemented by secondary coursework in child development, children/adult literature. (Associate’s Degree preferred).
- Two (2) years of progressive experience in public library work.
- Any equivalent combination of training and experience which provides the required skills, knowledge, and abilities.
