Position Summary

Student Library Assistant essential responsibilities include providing basic circulation assistance. stack maintenance, and troubleshooting minor photocopier, printer, and scanner problems. The Student Library Assistant reports to the Library Assistant III .
This position is located at the UIW – Rosenberg School of Optometry Library, 9725 Datapoint Dr., San Antonio, TX 78229.

This is a student position open to current UIW students who may be hired through the Federal Work-Study Program

Essential Functions

  • Manage the circulation of materials utilizing the automated library system ALMA .
  • Staff the circulation desk to assist patrons in locating items in the collection, with the operation of equipment, and in providing general information in person and by phone.
  • Enforce policies governing transactions, the use of space, equipment, and resources.
  • Refer patrons to a librarian when appropriate.
  • Assist in the processing of library materials.
  • Stack maintenance including shelving, shifting, and shelf reading.
  • Maintain photocopiers and printers by adding paper and toner, and troubleshooting minor problems and report all issues.
  • Assist staff with special projects, etc.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
Qualifications

Knowledge Skills and Abilities

  • Excellent customer service and communication skills.
  • Dependable, punctual and attentive to clients.
  • Professional appearance with the ability to conduct business in a professional manner.
  • Detail-oriented and ability to work independently without supervision.
  • Proficiency in mainstream computer software and the ability to manage basic computer hardware issues.
  • Experience working with the public, working with computers, photocopiers and printers.
  • Ability to learn quickly, work independently and problem solve.
  • Ability to follow directions and enforce Library policy;
  • Ability to work effectively with individuals from diverse communities and cultures;
  • Employee shall adhere to all applicable rules and regulations of the University, the Conference,and the NCAA .
Required Education
  • Currently enrolled UIW student.
  • Must have an overall GPA of 2.5 or greater.
  • Current UIW student approved and eligible to participate in the Federal Work-Study program.
Required Work Experience

None.

Preferred Qualifications

Knowledge of Library operation/services, audiovisual equipment, and computer sofware/hardware.

Required Certifications, Licenses or Registrations

None.

Work Hours

  • Monday through Sunday, nights and weekends.
  • Extended hours during mid-terms and final exams.
Physical Demands
  • Ability to push book trucks weighing in excess of 100 lbs;
  • Ability to bend and to reach shelves higher than 6 feet;
  • Ability to lift at least 20 lbs.
