The mission of The New York Times is to seek the truth and help people understand the world. That means independent journalism is at the heart of all we do as a company. It’s why we have a world-renowned newsroom that sends journalists to report on the ground from nearly 160 countries. It’s why we focus deeply on how our readers will experience our journalism, from print to audio to a world-class digital and app destination. And it’s why our business strategy centers on making journalism so good that it’s worth paying for.

The Opinion department is looking for an editor to join the Special Projects team, which shapes and executes the department’s most ambitious collaborations. Some of our projects have focused on homelessness, self-defense, climate change, and one man’s diaries. The subjects and story forms we produce vary wildly — from long-form pieces to immersive projects that span text, video, audio and graphics — but the constant is the first-class arguments that drive our journalism. We are looking for an editor who thinks flexibly and creatively, and can source fresh ideas and research from a diverse range of subject areas to shape into new story forms.

You will need to toggle between big-picture thinking and minute attention to detail to help conceive and execute these projects, and support senior editors’ efforts on the team. In addition to envisioning the projects, the special project team manages the workflow and oversees the process of making each project.

This is a hybrid position based in New York City and includes regular attendance in the office/studio each week per your departmental guidance.

Responsibilities

  • Source and commission high-impact enterprise ideas from the Opinion staff and external collaborators
  • Contribute to the development of the creative vision for how best to tell these stories in collaboration with other Special Projects’ colleagues, design, photo, graphics, audio and video
  • Help track workflow for ongoing projects
  • Edit pieces; write and edit display copy
  • Research and report for projects, where needed
  • Coordinate with the audience team to maximize reach and impact of the work
  • Demonstrate support and understanding of our value of journalistic independence and a strong commitment to our mission to seek the truth and help people understand the world.
  • You will report to the Opinion Editorial Director.

Basic Qualifications

  • 5+ years of experience editing staff or contributing writers at a digital or daily publication
  • Experience in multimedia journalism and alternate story forms (i.e. visual, video or audio)
  • Excellent editorial judgment and line editing skills
  • A proven track record of commissioning memorable journalism

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience working with high-profile journalists and household names
  • Experience making excellent work down to the sentence level
  • An enterprise mindset — open to collaboration and innovation

This position is represented by the NewsGuild of NY.
