City Reporter – Midland Daily News
Be the voice of a community. Report with purpose. Grow with Hearst.
Make a Real Impact with Every Story
Join a newsroom where your reporting truly matters. At the Midland Daily News, we don’t just chase headlines — we shine a light on what matters most to our community. We're looking for an energetic, curious, and driven City Reporter who’s ready to dig deep, break stories, and capture the pulse of local government, politics, and community life in Midland, Bay City, and the surrounding Great Lakes Bay Region.
This is more than a job. It’s your chance to be part of a fast-paced, collaborative newsroom that values storytelling, integrity, and innovation — and yes, we like to have fun while doing it.
What You’ll Be Doing
You’ll own the local government and community beat — keeping readers informed, engaged, and inspired. Whether it’s covering breaking news, digging into public records, or crafting long-form features, you’ll produce impactful journalism that resonates across digital and print platforms.
- Deliver accurate, compelling stories with speed and clarity.
- Cover city hall, state politics, business developments, and community events.
- Source stories that matter by building strong, local connections.
- Use public records and data to drive investigative reporting.
- Collaborate with editors and digital producers to optimize storytelling for digital audiences.
- Juggle breaking news with longer-term enterprise work — and know when to pivot as news breaks.
- A degree in journalism, communications, or a related field.
- Proven news reporting experience — internships and campus media count!
- Natural curiosity and a passion for covering public affairs.
- Excellent writing, interviewing, and organizational skills.
- A self-starter who thrives under deadline pressure.
- Familiarity with digital publishing tools and SEO is a plus.
- Bonus points for experience with FOIA/public records requests.
We believe journalism is a team sport. That’s why you’ll work in a collaborative, mentorship-driven newsroom with real opportunities for growth — all while helping shape the future of local news.
What We Offer
- A dynamic, mission-driven environment — no two days are the same.
- Ongoing skills training on the latest digital and storytelling tools.
- Competitive compensation with room to advance your career.
- A team that listens — your ideas and voice matter here.
We support your whole self — inside and outside the newsroom.
- Medical, dental, and vision coverage
- 401(k) with competitive matching
- Generous paid time off, holidays, and parental leave
- Mental health & wellness support
- Fertility, menopause, and LGBTQ+ inclusive health benefits
- Pet wellness reimbursement and Rover credits
- Monthly child & dependent care assistance
