The San Francisco Chronicle has an opening for a driven and intellectually curious journalist to cover the 15-member Bay Area Congressional delegation in Washington, D.C. The reporter will take on an essential position within the politics team, producing stories chronicling President Donald Trump’s policies targeting California and the tension between the state and the federal government, as well as how powerful Bay Area figures are shaping — or thwarting — solutions in Washington. They will also pursue angles on national issues including abortion, climate change, and civil rights that resonate with Bay Area readers.

D.C. Reporter

Location: Remote

The Chronicle seeks a self-starter with high standards, excellent writing skills, and a commitment to inclusive journalism. The role involves reporting and writing news and analysis for SFChronicle.com, competing with other outlets, examining system and leadership accountability, and collaborating on digital projects. Candidates should have at least three years of newsroom experience, strong news judgment, persistence with public records requests, and an understanding of the Bay Area’s unique dynamics.

Responsibilities:

• Report and write news and analysis for SFChronicle.com and print editions.
• Provide timely and authoritative information, competing with local and national outlets.
• Examine how systems and leaders deliver on promises.
• Collaborate with other newsroom teams on digital projects.

Qualifications:

• At least three years of newsroom or related experience.
• Strong news judgment, creativity, fairness, and meticulousness.
• Persistence in public records requests.
• Ability to work in a fast-changing environment.
• Understanding of San Francisco and Bay Area dynamics.

Requirements:

• Full-time position, possibly including weekends.
• Based in Washington or willing to relocate.
• Salary estimate: $90,000–$110,000 (California-specific), based on skills and experience.
