Job Description

Minimum Requirements

  • Minimum 10 years of full-time paid professional experience managing facilities design or the planning and coordination of capital projects, including overall design, contract administration, cost estimating, and scheduling activities.
  • At least 5 years of this experience must be with the design, planning, and construction of educational facilities or similar public agencies.

Required Education:

Graduation from a recognized college or university with a bachelor’s degree in architecture or engineering.

Licenses and Certificates:

A valid Certificate of Registration as an Architect by the California State Architectural Board or a Professional Engineer license by the State Board for Professional Engineers and Land Surveyors.

Duties:

  • Plan, organize, and direct the design activities for the School Upgrade Program and critical repair projects. Serve as the lead design professional, providing quality review, policy implementation, and coordination with the Division of State Architects (DSA).
  • Manage, develop, and coordinate the District’s design process for the Facilities Planning and Development Division, ensuring plans meet functional, budgetary, environmental, and legal requirements.
  • Manage multiple projects, collaborating with architects, consultants, and District personnel from conception through review, approval, and handoff to project execution.
  • Oversee the building design process to ensure compliance with LAUSD standards and guidelines, working with design professionals and District administrators to meet educational and building standards.
  • Establish and follow a process to select architectural firms based on qualifications and performance standards.
  • Provide architects with clear directives regarding goals, standards, site, schedule, and budget.
  • Implement an effective design review process to ensure designs meet project goals, provide value, and are appropriate and sustainable.
  • Make timely decisions and ensure all project steps are documented in accordance with legal requirements.
  • Review design changes to keep projects within budget.
  • Recommend architectural firm assignments from pre-qualified lists.
  • Participate in community outreach to foster understanding and acceptance of district projects.
  • Coordinate with professional staff supporting the design function.
  • Develop continuing education opportunities, such as seminars and workshops, on working with architects and contractors.
  • Coordinate project activities with other district departments, including Environmental Health and Safety, Maintenance and Operations, and Local Districts.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Salary depends on education and experience, ranging from $120K to $155K.
