The USA TODAY Network- New York - Albany statehouse reporter, based in Albany, works collaboratively with other NY team members and reporters and editors at Rochester, Westchester and nine Center for Community Journalism sites to deliver content detailing the impact of state government actions on lives and communities.
Requirements:
This role requires a valid driver's license, reliable transportation and the minimum liability insurance required by state law.

- This reporter's work relates the impact of New York state government's decisions and actions on the lives of New Yorkers
- Our target audience is in-state readers --our subscribers, loyal readers in our core markets plus New Yorkers drawn to this reporter's work through Google search. Key to attracting and retaining these readers is to focus on topics close to their lives and to write stories that answer their key questions regarding an event's or topic's impact.
- This reporter places a focus on how state government shapes and changes communities and lives, including but not limited to matters of public health, public safety, good governance, public spending and taxes and economic-development strategies and investment. Such reporting empowers state residents to navigate their lives and to raise questions about the effectiveness of state and local leaders and institutions.
- This reporter generates the content the Network requires to grow audience and to convert some segment of the audience into loyal readers and subscribers.
- This reporter develops relationships with sources in Albany and around the state, including officials, citizens and organizations affected by state government, in order to provide unique insight into the impact of state government decisions and actions on readers and communities.
- Key to this reporter's work will be delivering trending and insightful coverage of the 2026 gubernatorial race.
Requirements:
- Bachelor's or master's in communications, journalism or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
- At least 3 years of experience at a daily news organization.
- Familiarity with digital storytelling tools and techniques, especially video for both on site and social.
- Outstanding core journalism skills, including writing, spelling, grammar and style.
- Must thrive in a competitive news environment while possessing a collaborative spirit.
- Deep understanding of journalism ethics.
- Experience with social media, online metrics, third party tools and content management systems.
- Ability to multi-task.
