Job Goal:
To provide staff and students with a wide variety and range of library media that will encourage intellectual growth and aid staff and students in acquiring the skills needed to become effective, lifetime library users.
Performance Responsibilities:
- Operate and supervise the assigned library.
- Understand and follow oral and written directives.
- Maintain open communication and cordial relations with media, staff, teachers, administrators, sales representatives, parents, students, and others.
- Arrange book fairs, storytime, audio-visual shows, library displays, bulletin boards, promotional activities, and exhibits.
- Oversee the neatness and attractiveness of the library and its displays.
- Prepare and administer the library budget.
- Direct and assist in media production.
- Catalog, maintain, and operate audio-visual hardware.
- Keep media and equipment in working order.
- Weed obsolete media from collections.
- Make repairs on media, books, periodicals, and hardware.
- Perform annual inventory and prepare lists of missing media for discarding.
- Maintain inventory of supplies.
- Operate circulation desk and keep records.
- Monitor and record library attendance.
- Notify teachers of overdue books, collect fines, and keep records.
- Evaluate, select, and requisition new media.
- Assist teachers in selecting books and media, and make media available for instruction.
- Perform clerical routines for library operations.
- Order, type, and process various library documents.
- Ensure media are selected appropriately and organized.
- Shelve incoming media and file catalog cards.
- Prepare magazines and maintain files of catalogs, maps, pictures, and periodicals.
- Maintain cataloging system and instruct staff and students on its use.
- Report to the media processing center as directed.
- Maintain a broad collection of materials to meet school needs.
- Collaborate with administration and staff to integrate the library into education programs.
- Stay informed about library media trends and practices.
- Participate in staff workshops and library associations.
- Inform staff about new media acquisitions.
- Arrange interlibrary loans.
- Prepare books for reserve and maintain reserve shelf.
- Distribute schedules and lists of materials and equipment.
- Work with teachers to plan assignments involving library resources.
- Provide orientation and instruction in library skills to students.
- Promote appropriate conduct and discipline in the library.
- Assist students in locating and using reference materials and media.
- Encourage interest in books and media through activities.
- Help students develop independent research skills.
- Read to students and listen to them read.
- Guide students in reading, viewing, and listening activities.
- Supervise and train student media assistants.
- Perform other tasks necessary for library operation and maintenance.
Terms of Employment: Ten months per year. Salary and work year to be established by the board.
Evaluation: Performance will be evaluated according to the Board’s policy on the Evaluation of Personnel.
