Job Goal:

To provide staff and students with a wide variety and range of library media that will encourage intellectual growth and aid staff and students in acquiring the skills needed to become effective, lifetime library users.

Performance Responsibilities:

  1. Operate and supervise the assigned library.
  2. Understand and follow oral and written directives.
  3. Maintain open communication and cordial relations with media, staff, teachers, administrators, sales representatives, parents, students, and others.
  4. Arrange book fairs, storytime, audio-visual shows, library displays, bulletin boards, promotional activities, and exhibits.
  5. Oversee the neatness and attractiveness of the library and its displays.
  6. Prepare and administer the library budget.
  7. Direct and assist in media production.
  8. Catalog, maintain, and operate audio-visual hardware.
  9. Keep media and equipment in working order.
  10. Weed obsolete media from collections.
  11. Make repairs on media, books, periodicals, and hardware.
  12. Perform annual inventory and prepare lists of missing media for discarding.
  13. Maintain inventory of supplies.
  14. Operate circulation desk and keep records.
  15. Monitor and record library attendance.
  16. Notify teachers of overdue books, collect fines, and keep records.
  17. Evaluate, select, and requisition new media.
  18. Assist teachers in selecting books and media, and make media available for instruction.
  19. Perform clerical routines for library operations.
  20. Order, type, and process various library documents.
  21. Ensure media are selected appropriately and organized.
  22. Shelve incoming media and file catalog cards.
  23. Prepare magazines and maintain files of catalogs, maps, pictures, and periodicals.
  24. Maintain cataloging system and instruct staff and students on its use.
  25. Report to the media processing center as directed.
  26. Maintain a broad collection of materials to meet school needs.
  27. Collaborate with administration and staff to integrate the library into education programs.
  28. Stay informed about library media trends and practices.
  29. Participate in staff workshops and library associations.
  30. Inform staff about new media acquisitions.
  31. Arrange interlibrary loans.
  32. Prepare books for reserve and maintain reserve shelf.
  33. Distribute schedules and lists of materials and equipment.
  34. Work with teachers to plan assignments involving library resources.
  35. Provide orientation and instruction in library skills to students.
  36. Promote appropriate conduct and discipline in the library.
  37. Assist students in locating and using reference materials and media.
  38. Encourage interest in books and media through activities.
  39. Help students develop independent research skills.
  40. Read to students and listen to them read.
  41. Guide students in reading, viewing, and listening activities.
  42. Supervise and train student media assistants.
  43. Perform other tasks necessary for library operation and maintenance.

Terms of Employment: Ten months per year. Salary and work year to be established by the board.

Evaluation: Performance will be evaluated according to the Board’s policy on the Evaluation of Personnel.
