Job Summary:

Coordinates and collaborates on all studio equipment, kiln structures, and tools necessary to the daily operation of the Ceramics Studio. Assists faculty, both credit and non-credit, in any necessary studio functions for classes.

Education and Experience:

  • The position requires a high school diploma or equivalent.
  • Requires considerable experience working in a ceramic arts environment, including both an appreciation for aesthetics and more technical aspects of ceramic arts.
Knowledge and Skills:
  • Requires well-developed clay skills including working with green ware, bisque ware, highfire, and soda.
  • Must have a strong working knowledge of kilns including electric and gas fired kilns.
  • Requires robust knowledge of kiln mechanisms along with basic kiln-building knowledge.
  • Must have strong mechanical skills and the ability to troubleshoot kiln problems before they present safety risks.
  • Requires both gross motor and fine motor skills.
  • Requires a conscientious approach to environmental health and safety.
Abilities:
  • Must be able to perform the duties of the position efficiently and effectively without direct supervision.
  • Must be able to prioritize and organize tasks in order to meet production schedules and deadlines related to instruction.
  • Requires the ability to communicate regularly and effectively both verbally and in writing with a wide range of stakeholders.
  • The position requires diplomacy and the ability to help studio users navigate and resolve creative and other differences.

Physical Skills and Abilities:

Requires lifting of light to medium-weight materials (10 to 50 pounds).


Working Conditions:

Work is performed in a studio setting with some exposure to health and safety hazards. Occasional work outdoors in inclement weather. The covered kiln shed can be wet, windy, cold, and hot. The position requires some flexible scheduling based on firing volume and may require some weekend, evening(8-9 pm), and early morning (5-6 am) hours.

1. Working under the direction of the Ceramics Department Chair, coordinates equipment repair throughout each term. This includes maintaining safe gas lines, brick repair, kiln shelf repair and maintenance, kiln furniture maintenance, and chimney maintenance. In electric kilns this includes maintaining and repairing kilns including relays, elements, switches, and connectors. Within this work, must coordinate with Ceramics Department Chair for ordering necessary replacement parts.


2. Regularly maintains the pug mill as well as all recycled clay. This includes the coordination of ordering raw materials in collaboration with the Ceramics Department Chair, as well as making and maintaining the recycled clay for purchase.


3. Advises Chair and Benton Center administrative staff when equipment requires repair or replacement. Coordinates re-building and replacement of kilns as needed. This included all electric kilns and gas fired kilns.


4. Maintains a safe, clean, and efficient learning and artistic environment. Regularly monitors and calibrates firing equipment for safety, energy efficiency, and effectiveness.

5. Responsible for teaching safe practices to faculty, studio volunteers.

6. Provide regular feedback regarding firing operations to Chair, Ceramics ProgramCoordinator, PT faculty, and instructional assistants, as needed.

7. Performs other related duties as assigned.

All Part-time Classified employees begin at Step 1 of the salary schedule, corresponding to the position’s grade. Placement at a higher step on the salary schedule is not negotiable. Step increases are subject to eligibility, and only take place at the end of the Fiscal Year in July if approved and submitted by the employee’s supervisor of record. Hours worked in more than one position or department cannot be combined for step advancement. Part-time Classified employees are paid once monthly, on the last day of the month.
