Additionally, the Senior Editor leads key projects and supports the production of SME Media’s publications and digital platforms, while mentoring junior editorial staff and collaborating across teams to achieve organizational goals.

Brief Description

Responsible for driving the editorial direction and quality of SME Media’s print and digital content, with a focus on audience engagement and industry relevance. This role involves researching markets and trends, commissioning content from authors, editing and writing high-quality articles, and managing assigned content areas. Additionally, the Senior Editor leads key projects and supports the production of SME Media’s publications and digital platforms, while mentoring junior editorial staff and collaborating across teams to achieve organizational goals.

MAJOR FUNCTIONS:

  • Helps in the overall execution of the editorial direction and quality of SME’s industry-leading publications, including but not limited to Manufacturing Engineering magazine, Smart Manufacturing magazine, aligned manufacturing industry reports, AdvancedManufacturing.org, Advanced Manufacturing Now podcast, email newsletters, associated webinars, and other products and platforms as needed.
  • Assists the Editor-in-Chief in soliciting, recruiting, and contracting authors for print and digital publications and platforms.
  • Oversees progress of contracted authors and ensures timely delivery of high-quality content.
  • Researches, gathers, and edits materials for industry-relevant content that resonates with SME Media’s target audiences.
  • Investigates potential new topics based on market research, technological trends, and expert interviews.
  • Serves as the lead editor for designated products and content areas, overseeing their production and quality.
  • Posts and optimizes content for SME Media’s website and social media platforms to maximize audience reach.
  • Edits and writes content for all print and digital publications and platforms.
  • Obtains and verifies the accuracy of drawings, charts, formulas, graphs, and tables.
  • Develops and maintains an in-depth understanding of the needs and priorities of SME Media’s audience.
  • Maintains adherence to budgets and schedules, ensuring efficiency in production timelines.
  • Represents SME Media at conferences, tradeshows, and industry events as required.
  • Serves as webinar and podcast host.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Requirements

MINIMUM EDUCATION, SKILLS, AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:

  • Bachelor’s degree in journalism, English, communications, engineering, or a related field.
  • At least seven (7) years of related experience in publishing, engineering, or manufacturing environments, with a focus on technical editing and writing.
  • Demonstrated experience leading editorial projects and managing content areas (“editorial departments”).
  • Strong technical editing and writing skills, with the ability to adapt content for print and digital platforms.
  • Proven ability to manage budgets and production schedules.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
  • Proficiency in Adobe InCopy.
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced, multi-tasking environment while meeting deadlines.
  • Experience working with content management systems and digital publishing platforms required.
  • Knowledge of social media marketing strategies and audience engagement tools preferred.

WORKING CONDITIONS:

  • Normal office environment.
  • Primary office location: Southfield, MI
  • Regular, in-person attendance required
  • Travel required, which may include domestic and occasional international trips for conferences, meetings, tradeshows, and events.
  • May occasionally visit manufacturing facilities for research, events, or interviews, requiring adherence to safety protocols and appropriate attire.
  • During travel, the role may require traversing large event spaces, standing for extended periods, or carrying materials such as promotional items or media kits (up to 25 pounds).

FLSA CLASSIFICATION: Exempt

The salary range for this position is $82,600 - $96,000 per year, based on experience and qualifications. Offers typically fall within this range based on individual qualifications and budget availability. In addition to base salary, SME offers a comprehensive benefits package, including medical, dental, and vision insurance, 403(b) with company matching, generous paid time off and holidays, professional development and training opportunities, and additional wellness and work-life balance benefits. Certain positions may also be eligible for bonus/incentive compensation, subject to role and company policies.
