Fine Arts Library Assistant - Federal Work Study Position (Student Wage)

Student Library Assistants provide front-line customer service at the Fine Arts Library, supporting circulation and information services. The library specializes in collections related to architecture, art history, archaeology, and the classics.

This role involves tasks such as checking out and discharging materials, retrieving books, searching for lost items, assisting with special projects, and shelving. Ideal candidates are dependable, detail-oriented, proactive, and familiar with data entry, office programs, and library policies. They should also be capable of working independently and learning the Library of Congress call number system.

Work takes place at an Information and Services Desk, so reliability is essential.

The position starts in August 2025 and ends on May 8, 2026, with potential for renewal. Most shifts are 8-12 hours weekly, with options to pick up additional shifts.

DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Provide welcoming, informative assistance to library patrons, answering questions about directions, circulation, and policies.
  • Charge, discharge, renew, and retrieve library materials.
  • Assist patrons in locating materials in the stacks.
  • Help with printers and other library technologies.
  • Record questions and collect usage statistics via library software.
  • Assist with opening and closing the library during scheduled shifts.
  • Maintain the library's appearance and orderliness.
  • Work a minimum of 8 hours per week, up to 20 hours, including weekends and exam periods.
  • Follow all library policies and procedures.
  • Support general duties and special projects as needed.
  • Be available from the hire date through the last day of exams in Spring 2026.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Excellent customer service skills and enjoyment of working with the public.
  • Ability to serve users courteously and efficiently, in person and by phone.
  • Dependability, accuracy, attention to detail, and independence.
  • Flexibility to cover shifts and adhere to schedules.
  • Commitment to working at least 8 hours weekly.
  • Punctuality for scheduled shifts.
  • Basic computer skills and ability to learn library systems.
  • Ability to push loaded book carts.

PREFERENCES:

First, second, or third-year students preferred.

LOCATION:

Fiske Kimball Fine Arts Library, Bayly Dr., Charlottesville, VA. Located within the Arts Grounds, near Rugby Rd., attached to Campbell Hall and behind the Fralin Museum of Art.

POSITION DETAILS:

Compensation: $14.53/hour

Must be a current UVA undergraduate enrolled in at least 12 credits and eligible for Federal Work-Study.
