PURPOSE OF POSITION:
CBS News Chicago is seeking an innovative visual storyteller. The ideal candidate will have expertise in NPPA & cinematic principles, a keen eye for detail, and a demonstrated work portfolio. Responsibilities include covering news events for CBS Chicago newscasts, CBS News Streaming, and local programming. The role supports multi-platform social media strategies and cbschicago.com. Field duties involve operating broadcast cameras, drones, microwave and satellite ENG vehicles, non-linear editing systems, and IP-based broadcast applications.

This is a per diem position.

PRIMARY ACCOUNTABILITIES

• Demonstrate knowledge of ENG news coverage, including Sony HD cameras, Edius editing, ENG lighting, microwave and satellite transmissions, drones & GoPro cameras.
• Edit news stories under tight deadlines while maintaining editorial integrity.
• Operate company vehicles safely, often over long distances and in various weather conditions.
• Bring creativity to broadcast storytelling.
• Meet daily production deadlines.
• Protect news equipment from theft and damage.
• Contribute to editorial discussions with story ideas and production strategies.
• Perform other duties as assigned.

REQUIREMENTS

• Ability to extend scheduled shifts on short notice due to news demands.
• Physical ability to carry at least 75 lbs of gear, set up and break down equipment quickly.
• Safe operation of company vehicles in all conditions.
• Flexible schedule, including weekends, nights, and overnights.
• Effective communication of story details and logistical information.
• Must join the IBEW 1220 union if not already a member.

PREFERRED EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE AND CERTIFICATION

• Five years’ experience in photography and editing, preferably in a top 25 market.
• Bachelor’s degree in journalism or related field preferred.
• Knowledge of Chicago area is a plus.
• Strong non-linear editing skills, including Edius.
• Valid Illinois driver’s license.
• Experience with Jib & Technical Operations Center is a plus.
• FAA Part 107 drone certification is a plus.
• Strong troubleshooting skills.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION

Hourly pay range: $52.68 - $58.88. Starting pay depends on location, experience, and other factors.
