SENIOR TECHNICAL WRITER (NAUT):
Bowhead seeks a Senior Technical Writer to support our customer on the Nautical contract in Arlington, VA. This role involves creating and managing technical documentation for complex DoD systems undergoing cloud migration, ensuring compliance with government standards.
Responsibilities
- Develop and maintain comprehensive technical documentation including system specifications, user manuals, installation guides, and operational procedures.
- Manage documentation projects across multiple cloud migration initiatives.
- Establish and enforce documentation standards, style guides, and quality assurance processes.
- Conduct interviews with subject matter experts to gather detailed information.
- Create and maintain documentation templates, standards, and best practices.
- Review and edit technical documents for accuracy and clarity.
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams to ensure documentation alignment.
- Develop documentation management systems and workflows.
- Mentor junior technical writers.
- Coordinate with government customers on documentation requirements.
- Manage version control and configuration management systems.
- Create visual aids and graphical elements to enhance documentation.
- Develop and deliver training materials and presentations.
- Ensure documentation meets DoD standards, security, and accessibility guidelines.
- Participate in reviews, meetings, and planning sessions.
- Manage budgets, schedules, and resources.
- Stay updated on emerging documentation technologies and best practices.
- Coordinate with security personnel on handling classified information.
- Interface with customers and stakeholders in working groups and meetings.
- Chair or co-chair meetings on behalf of government.
- Resolve problems, manage resources, and monitor performance.
- Supervise and control documentation staff.
- Provide replacement and unplanned staffing information as required.
Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in relevant fields or 15+ years of experience in technical writing.
- At least 10+ years of experience in technical writing, preferably in government/DoD environments.
- 3+ years managing technical writing teams and projects.
- Experience with documentation management, version control, and configuration management.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office, Adobe Creative Suite, and documentation platforms.
- Understanding of software development, system architecture, and cloud computing.
- Leadership experience in technical writing teams.
- Strong project management skills.
- Knowledge of DoD documentation standards and style guides.
- Experience with XML, HTML, and markup languages.
- Analytical skills for understanding complex systems.
Certification Requirements
Required: IAT Level II certification (e.g., Security+, GSEC, SSCP, CCNA Security, GCIH)
Desired: PMP, technical writing, or cloud certifications.
Physical Demands
- Lift 25 pounds occasionally.
- Stand and walk for extended periods.
- Twist, bend, and squat periodically.
Security Clearance
Must maintain Top Secret clearance with SCI and SAP eligibility. U.S. Citizenship required. No remote work allowed.
