Associated Students' (A.S.) mission is to support and represent the students of San Jose State University by continuing the organization's legacy of student advocacy and leadership; to enhance SJSU students' education through high quality programs and services; and to prepare students as they move towards a thoughtful and purposeful life after graduation.

A.S. is a non-profit auxiliary corporation serving the students of San Jose State University whose primary source of funding is from mandatory student body fees. A.S. Departments include the César Chávez Community Action Center, Child Development Center, General Services Center, Human Resources, Information Technology, Events, Marketing, Print & Technology Center, Student Government, and Transportation Solutions.

Position Summary

The Marketing Manager is responsible for the ongoing development and implementation of all marketing and communication strategies for the organization. The incumbent is responsible for developing department systems, serving as the key marketing contact for all departments, and overseeing the production of all promotional materials or marketing campaigns. This position directly supervises and provides direction to staff and student employees. The manager is also responsible for student assistant development, customer service, and establishing working partnerships with University departments or organizations.

Essential Functions

Strategic Planning and Oversight
  • Develop and implement marketing plans or strategies that are aligned with the Associated Students' mission and increase engagement in programs and services.
  • Establish and maintain marketing and communication policies, procedures, or systems that promote brand identity and ensure efficient operations.
  • Evaluate and optimize the use of print and digital marketing platforms based on audience effectiveness.
Department Operations and Budget Management
Oversee department operations, including:
  • Team schedules and workload planning.
  • Annual budget creation, implementation, and monitoring.
  • Monthly review and submission of credit card statements and department invoices.
  • Ordering supplies and promotional materials.
  • Approving hours department payroll and processing invoices.
  • Coordinate HR-related activities such as staff requests, onboarding, and team announcements.

Project Management
  • Delegate, review, and approve marketing-related projects, including campaigns, promotional materials, social media, advertisements, video production, and web content.
  • Work collaboratively with stakeholders to write, edit, and approve content for various mediums including reports, grants, newsletters, website, social media, press releases, and event programs.
  • Lead process improvement initiatives by reviewing and redesigning department forms and workflows, such as the Graphics Request Form, Marketing Request Form, and Promotional Meeting Request Form.
Staff Supervision and Development
  • Recruit, hire, train, and supervise a team of student assistants and professional staff.
  • Provide ongoing development, coaching, and support to staff, ensuring high performance and professional growth.
  • Advise and mentor student government roles as needed/assigned, particularly the Director of Communications and the Students' Election Commission (SEC) Marketing Officer.
  • Write annual performance reviews for staff and student assistants
Analytics and Reporting
  • Measure and report on the performance of marketing campaigns and assess outcomes against goals.
  • Help promote departmental or programmatic surveys to understand student needs, opinions, and satisfaction levels, and report findings.
  • Write and submit monthly department reports to the Board of Directors highlighting key projects, activities, and learning outcomes.
Partnerships and Outreach
  • Build relationships with key stakeholders on and off campus, including students, faculty, staff, vendors, and organizations.
  • Monitor and share campus-wide news, blogs, and social media updates through A.S. and university channels.
  • Review and approve the use of the A.S. logo on student organization apparel and promotional materials.
  • Attend various meetings, programs, trainings, and events.
  • Serve on A.S. and SJSU committees as determined.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Ability to work independently in a fast-paced university environment while managing multiple projects simultaneously, meeting deadlines, staying within budget, and consistently delivering high-quality results.
  • Must be highly organized, detail-oriented, and possess excellent time and project management skills.
  • Proven marketing skills and experience with customer and market research.
  • Excellent oral, written, interpersonal, public speaking, and editing/publishing skills.
  • Ability to analyze problems and facilitate solutions within a timely manner.
  • Excellent computer skills with proficiency in Microsoft Office; adept at learning and using relevant software applications.
  • Ability to maintain professionalism at all times while providing positive customer service to students, faculty, and staff.
Work Environment, Hours and Physical Demands
  • This job operates in an office environment and routinely uses standard office equipment.
  • Work hours are Monday through Friday, 8:00 AM - 5:00 PM. Occasional evening and weekend work may be required as job duties demand.
  • Must be able to operate a computer, including a keyboard and mouse, and phone.
  • Must be able to sit for extended periods of time and occasionally lift or carry office or event products or supplies, up to 40 pounds.
Required Education ot Preferred Education and Experience
  • B.A./B.S. Business Marketing degree or related field from an accredited college/university
  • 3-5 years of related experience or equivalent combination of education and experience in marketing/communications, public relations, advertising, journalism, graphic design or a similar field
  • Preferred experience in developing and managing marketing strategies for a college campus community while serving the needs of a diverse student population
  • Experienced with managing website development, print production and design
  • Work with graphic designers is a plus
