The Data Reporter is able to gather and analyze original data on the industries, companies and trends driving business decisions in the Memphis area and communicate what he or she uncovers using both text and visual storytelling techniques.
The position follows a partially hybrid schedule, with in-office work on Monday, Wednesdays, and Thursdays. Please note that, depending on business needs, additional in-office days may occasionally be required. The role also includes being available to attend evening business events as needed.
- Collects and analyzes company and industry data for San Antonio Business Journal’s weekly industry Lists, using surveys, public documents, and other relevant sources.
- Regularly reports stories based on data from the Lists and other research projects using appropriate narrative and visual storytelling techniques.
- Reports and writes four to six cover stories a year using data resources.
- Oversees creation of charts and infographics to illustrate research data findings.
- Works alongside reporters and editors on enterprise projects that include or are driven by data.
- Manages SABJ’s database of regional companies.
- Actively looks for creative ways to tell important stories using data.
- Report on and track industries, companies and people as assigned by the editors.
- A bachelor's degree or equivalent work experience, including two to three years of journalism experience, is preferred
- Strong news judgment, understanding of news writing, journalistic ethics and story structure
- Meticulous eye for detail
- Generate and execute digital content ideas.
- Curiosity about people, business leaders and can spot trends
- Passionate about telling stories and through data from surveys, regulatory agencies, other public documents and sources
- Solid Microsoft Excel/spreadsheet skills
- Able to mine and analyze data
- Able to work well as a team, collaborating with reporters and editors.
- Track metrics and help staff identify and deploy tactics to meet traffic and engagement goals.
- Regularly participate in and attend Business Journal-sponsored events
- Manage various social media channels
- Ability to relate comfortably to a wide range of people, in person, on the phone and online
- Proficient with MS Office Products
- Proficient with Web-Based Communication Platforms (Teams, Zoom, Webex, etc.)
- Take on any other assignment made by the manager(s).
