Position Description

U.S. Soccer seeks a creative, passionate, and organized content professional to lead editorial coverage of the Open Cup, the nation’s longest-running soccer competition. The Open Cup Writer and Producer will serve as the primary editorial lead for all storytelling related to the Open Cup, overseeing and producing written content across U.S. Soccer’s digital platforms and coordinating with internal teams to shape the tournament’s narrative.

This role will work cross-functionally with Social Media, Video, Content Strategy & Planning, Marketing, Corporate Communications, and other teams to ensure cohesive storytelling. The ideal candidate will be a skilled writer with a sharp editorial sense, strong organizational skills, a creative storytelling approach, and the ability to thrive in fast-paced, event-based environments.

This position requires travel to Open Cup games, and availability to work nights, weekends, and holidays as per the tournament schedule.

Primary Responsibilities

  • Serve as lead writer and content producer for all Open Cup coverage on U.S. Soccer’s website and app.
  • Develop the Open Cup content plan in collaboration with the Content Strategy & Planning team, aligning with Federation priorities and audience engagement goals.
  • Create a variety of written content including articles, match previews, features, and updates.
  • Maintain high standards of accuracy, quality, and engagement, even under tight deadlines.
  • Shape the editorial narrative, highlighting compelling stories that showcase the diversity of U.S. Soccer.
  • Collaborate with internal departments to align messaging and amplify stories.
  • Coordinate with the Digital Editor to ensure consistent voice and tone across all content.
  • Travel to games for content capture, interviews, and on-the-ground storytelling.
  • Manage content across digital touchpoints, including landing pages and the homepage.
  • Stay informed on Open Cup teams, history, and evolving narratives.
  • Monitor content performance and collaborate to optimize outcomes.
  • Support additional content needs across the Federation as required.

Requirements

Minimum Qualifications

  • 7+ years in sports journalism, editorial production, or digital content creation.
  • Proven excellence in writing, editing, and storytelling under deadlines.
  • Experience with digital platforms and CMS tools.
  • Ability to collaborate in live event settings.
  • Flexibility to travel and work evenings, weekends, and holidays.
  • Deep understanding of U.S. Soccer and the cultural significance of the Open Cup.
  • Highly organized, capable of managing multiple projects.
  • Ability to meet tight deadlines while maintaining quality.
  • Strong SEO knowledge and trend awareness.
  • Comfortable in fast-paced environments with sensitive information.
