This position is responsible for the creation, development, and deployment of designs, animations, and real-time graphics directories at an intermediate level of understanding and skill. The Real-Time Developer II works on directory maintenance and new graphic builds while collaborating with a team or independently, with little oversight. They communicate with supervisors, teammates, and partners to help set expectations and ensure on-time delivery. They will adhere to department and project workflows and processes. They will provide error-free graphics and technical support. They will participate in and assist with training and onboarding programs. This is a creative role that requires the ability to innovate, learn quickly, and collaborate with others under varying deadlines to maintain the quality of ESPN on-air product.
Responsibilities:
- Utilize Vizrt, Ross Xpression, or Unreal Engine for graphics creation, development, and deployment for ESPN productions.
- Plan, build, maintain, and update graphic directories independently or with a team.
- Translate project details and creative direction into custom designs, animations, and layouts.
- Provide troubleshooting and support for event and studio directories.
- Use software such as Adobe Photoshop, After Effects, Illustrator, and Cinema4D for designs and animations.
- Understand and utilize internal proprietary software and workflows.
- Learn about specialty segments like touchscreen, virtual studio, data visualization, augmented reality, etc.
- Collaborate with management and teammates to manage expectations and ensure timely delivery.
- Research and resolve technical questions related to design and animation workflows.
- Follow project workflows, scripts, and processes.
- Participate in hardware/software upgrades and studio builds.
- Assist in onboarding and training of co-workers.
- Contribute to long-term initiatives within the ESPN Creative Studio.
- Push creativity and software skills, explore new technologies, and communicate project phases to maintain quality.
- Participate in training and technical support for various stakeholders.
- Ensure graphic formats adhere to ESPN standards.
- Prepare image files for broadcast.
- Innovate and learn new software to enhance versatility.
- Manage files efficiently for archiving and retrieval.
- Report and troubleshoot equipment, software, and environment issues.
- Complete administrative tasks such as time entry and reporting.
- Maintain high standards of quality, accuracy, and timeliness.
- Track and report contributions.
Requirements:
- Minimum 3 years of experience in graphics design or live production.
- Intermediate knowledge of Vizrt, Ross Xpression, or Unreal Engine.
- Proficiency in Adobe Photoshop, Illustrator, and After Effects.
- Strong understanding of effective type layout.
- Experience with graphics for live broadcast settings.
- Interest or experience in broadcast/television technologies.
- Ability to learn new concepts, techniques, and software.
- Good communication skills for setting expectations and taking direction.
- Creative and innovative mindset.
- Ability to assist with hardware/software/studio builds.
- Motivated, able to work under pressure, prioritize tasks, and adapt to change.
- Attention to detail, spelling, and grammar.
- Willingness to work flexible hours and occasionally travel/live in a broadcast environment.
- Provide a link to an online portfolio or demo reel.
Preferred Requirements:
- 5+ years of real-time graphics experience at a major network or production company.
- Experience with live sports broadcast graphics and workflows.
- Knowledge of Vizrt and Trio software.
- Experience with 3D graphics, modeling, and animation (Cinema4D, Maya, Unreal, etc.).
- Strong interest and knowledge of sports and sports culture.
- Reliable transportation.
Education:
- High School Diploma or Equivalent (required).
- Bachelor’s degree or higher (preferred).
