Position Information

Texas Highways seeks an Audience Engagement Editor to deepen our connection with readers through newsletters, engagement campaigns, and other digital communications. This hybrid role combines tactical execution with creative storytelling—ideal for a strong communicator who understands how to grow audiences across digital platforms. You’ll collaborate across editorial, circulation, and marketing teams to drive outreach, engagement, and audience growth. The ideal candidate should be digitally savvy, have strong writing skills, be curious about emerging media and knowledgeable about the state of Texas.

This position reports directly to the Publisher; day-to-day work and strategic planning are led by the Digital Strategy Manager.

Minimum Salary

: 57,614.00

Maximum Salary

: 93,138.00

Pay Basis

Texas Highways Audience Engagement Editor

Texas Highways seeks an Audience Engagement Editor to deepen our connection with readers through newsletters, engagement campaigns, and other digital communications. This position reports directly to the Publisher; day-to-day work and strategic planning are led by the Digital Strategy Manager.

Key Responsibilities:
• Write, build, and manage Texas Highways' weekly and special-edition newsletters
• Monitor and respond to audience feedback across channels
• Coordinate and implement digital campaigns, partnerships, and promotions
• Collaborate with circulation and marketing on acquisition and retention messaging
• Contribute to audience analysis, testing, and engagement strategies
• Contribute to development of digital products

Detailed Job Duties:

  • Plan, write, build, and send weekly newsletters and special issues
  • Coordinate content with other members of the Digital Team
  • Repackage content from print and web
  • Develop new newsletter offerings
  • Lead efforts to evolve and expand how we attract newsletter subscribers
  • Track open and click rates and other KPIs, experiment with formats and subject lines
  • Coordinate newsletter ad placements and performance tracking with business team
  • Provide monthly ad performance reports to Publisher and Advertising Manager
  • Assist Digital Strategy Manager with newsletter vendor oversight
  • Campaigns & Promotions
    • Support business and editorial-led digital campaigns
    • Coordinate with influencers or partners to boost reach
    • Assist Associate Publisher with paid campaigns
    • Write promotional copy and news releases for features and special projects
  • Audience Feedback & Research
    • Monitor reader messages via digital channels; route and respond as appropriate
    • Assist Associate Publisher with reader surveys and summarize insights
  • Other Duties as Assigned
    • Perform specific duties as assigned by the Publications Section Director (Publisher) or Division Director
  • Experience: 3 years of experience in digital content, audience engagement and development, editorial marketing or closely related experience. (Experience can be satisfied by full time or prorated part time equivalent). Related graduate level education may be substituted for experience on a year per year basis.

Licenses and Certifications:

  • Valid driver’s license. This position requires driving a state vehicle.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience with newsletter platforms and digital analytics
  • Highly detail-oriented and comfortable juggling multiple projects
  • Passion for connecting audiences to meaningful content
  • Working knowledge of Adobe Suite
  • Familiarity with Texas destinations and cultural topics is a plus
  • Experience running paid digital campaigns is not required but is highly recommended/preferred

Physical Requirements and Working Conditions:

  • Sedentary work: Lift up to 10 lbs at a time and occasionally carry files/small tools
  • Sitting - prolonged periods of time
  • Fingering-picking, pinching, typing; working primarily with fingers rather than whole hand
