The communications department operates as a small but mighty team promoting exhibitions, collections, public programs, and other museum activities. Our work encompasses all communications needs not limited to the website, social media, media relations, digital marketing, print materials, video, and more.


The social media specialist will play an important role in telling the museum’s stories through digital media – social platforms, the website, and other means. The ideal candidate is a creative content creator with a love of art and museums who understands digital media and how it can be used to entertain, educate, delight, and reach out to new audiences. We seek a colleague who understands how to develop a social media calendar, cultivate a suitable online voice, and create fun and engaging content to support our mission. A great fit will be happy to work collaboratively with the communications team and other members of the museum staff, and excited to learn about all the Wadsworth has to offer.


Our objective for this position is to achieve exceptional virtual and real-life engagement, raise awareness of the Wadsworth and its collections and programs, and foster community through the strategic utilization of a smart and achievable social media marketing roadmap.


As a busy and collegial team, we pitch in on departmental tasks as needed while leading in our primary functions.


ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES


  • Work with communications team to build and execute on-brand social media strategy supporting museum mission and audience research.
  • Keep a regular social media calendar based on the museum’s mission and activities
  • Develop engaging, on-brand social media content and monitor tagged content
  • Respond to DMs and comments on behalf of the museum
  • Monitor performance of owned channels
  • Keep current re social media developments, trends, and issues
  • Help create and distribute digital newsletters and e-blasts
  • Update the museum’s online events calendar, posting events through social media channels, and external websites
  • Maintain external outreach lists and event calendars
  • Assist with website content
  • Assist with film and photography shoots
  • Collaborate beneficially with museum colleagues and external vendors

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

Education and Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree or higher in Communications, Marketing, Business, New Media or Public Relations or related field
  • At least 2 years of full-time work experience
  • Proven professional experience in social media marketing, digital media, content creation, or similar

Skills and Abilities

  • Exceptional command of social media trends and up-to-the-minute developments in the field
  • Able to respond to issues and trends with creativity and speed
  • Able to manage competing requests and priorities with tact
  • Able to work collaboratively and independently
  • Strong writing and editing (photo/video/text) skills
  • Basic web editing skills
  • Experience using a content management system (e.g. WordPress or similar)
  • Experience using email marketing services (e.g. Constant Contact or similar)
  • Knowledge of social media and web analytics
  • Knowledge of SEO and CRO
  • Knowledge of online marketing methods
  • Strong organizational abilities
  • Fluency in English language -- Spanish a plus.
  • Knowledge of, and interest in art and museums
  • Flexible, positive attitude

This job operates in a clerical, office setting within a museum with both modern and historic architectural elements. This role routinely uses standard office equipment such as computers, phones, photocopiers, filing cabinets, and fax machines. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to receive oral and written instructions and to clearly communicate in person, over the telephone, through email and through other electronic means. Employee is required to move about the work area, ascend and descend stairs; and stand and/or sit for extended periods of time. Must be able to carry boxes of printed materials, up to 25 pounds unassisted. The employee is required to visually or otherwise identify, observe, assess and differentiate dimension and color.
