Social Media Specialist

As a Social Media Specialist, you will play a pivotal role in executing our digital strategy across platforms with a primary focus on creating planned, social-first content and fostering meaningful community engagement. With over 1.3 million followers, we're looking for a creative, strategic communicator who is passionate about democracy and sees social media as a powerful tool for impact and storytelling.

The ideal candidate thrives in fast-paced, newsroom environments while staying intentional and collaborative. They live and breathe social media, understand the nuances of each platform, and are always thinking social-first. They're confident navigating start-up culture and deeply committed to showing up authentically in conversations that center vulnerable communities. They will help translate complex legal decisions into compelling, accessible content contributing to a team that turns information into action.

Key Responsibilities

  • Planned Content & Strategy
    • Write and schedule timely, engaging social media content that amplifies Democracy Docket's original reporting and extends the lifecycle of published stories across text-based platforms.
    • Create visually compelling content for Instagram and other visual storytelling platforms, from concept through execution.
    • Partner closely with the News, Research, and Growth teams to support broader organizational goals.
    • Design Instagram carousels and collaborate with the graphic designer on promotional and merchandise-related content.
    • Pitch, script, film, edit, and post short-form vertical video content in line with platform best practices and strategy.
  • Community Management
    • Monitor and engage with audiences daily especially on Instagram, but also on Bluesky, X, LinkedIn, and Facebook to cultivate a vibrant, informed community.
    • Respond to comments and questions, moderate discussions, and identify opportunities for authentic interactions with users and partner organizations.
    • Track social media trends and audience insights to inform content and engagement strategies.
    • Regularly report on audience engagement, trends, and platform performance to the Social Content and Strategy Manager and broader team.
  • Other
    • Support digital and social media projects as needed, contributing to the flexibility and innovation of a growing team.

Required Qualifications

  • 3+ years of experience in social media, digital content creation, or community management, ideally in a rapid response or fast-paced environment.
  • Exceptional writing and communication skills, with the ability to translate complex legal and political topics into clear, engaging, and accessible social-first content.
  • Strong grasp of storytelling tailored to social platforms, with an understanding of trends, algorithms, and the evolving digital landscape.
  • Highly organized, detail-oriented, and deadline-driven.
  • Experience with graphic and video editing tools such as CapCut, Adobe Creative Suites, Canva, or similar platforms.
  • Knowledge of and/or passion for U.S. politics, legal advocacy, and civil rights issues is essential.
  • Familiarity with social media analytics and the ability to interpret data to inform and optimize content strategy.
  • Comfortable appearing on camera for short-form video content is a plus.

This is a full-time role based out of our Washington, D.C. office. We currently operate on a hybrid schedule, with remote work on Mondays and Fridays and in-office days on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays.

Salary Range: $72,000-$80,000
