Estimated Travel: 15%

POSITION OVERVIEW:

The Director of Technical Design oversees cross-functional teams and vendor partners, ensures project alignment with architectural and engineering requirements, and manages Audio-Visual deliverables from concept through execution. This role leads teams in the efforts across immersive experiences, museum exhibits, and other location-based experiences.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

Project Leadership & Collaboration:

  • Act as the primary technical liaison between architects, general contractors, electrical contractors, and owner’s representatives
  • Address permitting, ADA, engineering, and other compliance needs across projects
  • Attend OAC calls and update subcontractors with relevant changes
  • Issue change notices and maintain communication on design intent and updates

Team & Vendor Management:

  • Oversee internal and external Technical Design (TD) resources and deliverables
  • Lead cross-functional teams (staff & freelance) in producing CAD/BIM drawings, facility impact studies, and bid packages
  • Manage and expand freelance/1099 partnerships and strategic vendor relationships
  • Provide labor estimates for new bids and update labor hour trackers to maintain budgets

Design Oversight & Quality Assurance:

  • Review and approve all technical deliverables including CAD/BIM drawings, schematics, and build-to-print packages
  • Implement and maintain file management protocols and submittal logs
  • Ensure compliance with Solomon Group and client design standards
  • Conduct quality control reviews at 25%, 50%, 90% stages, and final project walkthroughs
  • Travel to job sites for inspections and coordination as needed

Process Improvement & Innovation:

  • Drive continuous improvement in design processes to increase efficiency and reduce costs
  • Stay current on industry trends, technologies, materials, and fabrication processes
  • Oversee the integration of AV and lighting solutions into design and fabrication packages

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • 10+ years in technical design for museums, exhibits, or experiential environments
  • 4+ years in a management or leadership role
  • Expert in CAD and BIM software (AutoCAD, Revit, SolidWorks, Rhino, etc.); certifications preferred
  • Proficient in Procore and Microsoft Excel
  • Familiar with 300/400 series architectural drawings and permitting processes
  • Excellent understanding of construction methods, engineering principles, and material selection
  • Interior and creative design experience preferred
  • Knowledge of audiovisual and lighting integration in custom fabrication
  • Detail-oriented with excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Experience in metal fabrication and graphics/typography processes
