The Music Therapist will be responsible for:

  1. Demonstrating basic knowledge of the purpose, intent, and function of music therapy for various client populations.
  2. Demonstrating basic knowledge of philosophical, psychological, physiological, and sociological bases for the use of music as therapy.
  3. Demonstrating basic knowledge of the use of current technologies in music therapy assessment, treatment, and evaluation.
  4. Helping patients to restore and maintain mental health, increase comprehension abilities, improve physical abilities, and enhance overall wellbeing.
  5. Instructing patients individually or in groups in prescribed instrumental or vocal music and music projective techniques such as guided imagery, progressive relaxation, or awareness of conscious feelings.
  6. Communicating assessment findings and recommendations in written and verbal forms.
  7. Observing and accurately recording the client's responses to assessment.
  8. Selecting and implementing culturally appropriate methods for assessing the client's assets and problems through music.
  9. Identifying the client's therapeutic needs through analysis and interpretation of assessment data.
  10. Selecting or creating music therapy experiences and settings that meet the client's needs.
  11. Formulating goals and objectives for individual and group therapy based on assessment findings.
  12. Providing preliminary estimates of treatment frequency and duration.
  13. Offering sensory stimulation that utilizes visual, auditory, or tactile cues.
  14. Promoting relaxation and stress reduction in music therapy sessions.
  15. Utilizing therapeutic verbal skills during sessions.
  16. Sequencing and pacing music experiences according to client needs and situational factors.
  17. Conducting or facilitating group and individual music therapy using improvisational skills.
  18. Creating a physical environment conducive to effective therapy, including space, furniture, equipment, and instruments.
  19. Developing and maintaining a repertoire of music suitable for different ages, cultures, and cognitive levels.

Education:

  • Bachelor's Degree required
  • Master's Degree preferred
  • Certification from the Board for Music Therapists (CBMT)
  • MT-BC (Music Therapist, Board Certified)

Professional Experience:

  • 2-4 years of related experience
  • Basic instrument-playing ability, moderate vocal skills, and substantial knowledge of music styles
  • Ability to develop and utilize various musical applications to coordinate treatment plans
