The Bulwark—one of the fastest-growing and most dynamic news outlets in the country—is looking for a lead producer to oversee the conception, execution, and distribution of several of our chart-topping shows.

This position requires an entrepreneurial and organized individual who is passionate about political news and current events, with the ability to produce programming that will resonate with a national audience. You will lead a team to create daily compelling audio and video content and will play a leading role in each show's social and digital branding across all platforms. You will work closely with show hosts on topic development, guests, and promotional ideas. The role demands the ability to work under pressure, manage multiple deadlines, and adapt to breaking news situations.

Our programming is responsive to the news cycle and can spill into evenings or weekends; staff flexibility is important to our workflow. This is a three-month contract that could potentially turn into a staff position. Preference will be given to those willing to work in our offices in Washington, DC.

The Bulwark is home to Tim Miller, Sarah Longwell, Bill Kristol, and many other leading voices in the pro-democracy movement. It is dedicated to providing political analysis and reporting free from partisan constraints or corporate interests. It publishes dozens of pro-democracy newsletters, podcasts, and video content from a variety of viewpoints, and reaches millions of people across all major platforms.

Responsibilities:

• Lead a team to produce political analysis programming by building a comprehensive and visually compelling show map

• Manage a programming strategy and collaborate with hosts on building each rundown

• Identify and develop original story angles by generating topics and booking guests that drive conversations and audience growth

• Utilize video content for social and digital promotion

• Develop and train a team of producers and editors to support a positive work culture

• Collaborate with various teams to achieve organizational goals

Qualifications

  • 5+ years experience working in news with podcast production experience; live programming experience is a plus
  • Proven track record in booking quality guests and developing programming that breaks news
  • Exceptional understanding of digital audio and video editing skills
  • The ability to balance multiple daily and long-term editorial priorities while remaining organized and composed
  • Success in building, developing, and leading a team and experience partnering with show hosts utilizing excellent communication and interpersonal skills
  • Deep knowledge of politics and current events that conveys their impact both inside and outside of the Beltway
  • Talented scriptwriting skills with the ability to reflect the host’s voice
  • A proactive approach to troubleshooting problems
  • Keen understanding of social media algorithms on platforms such as Twitter, Instagram, TikTok, Bluesky, Reddit, and others
  • Strong editorial judgment and newsgathering skills, with the ability to isolate the most salient pieces of a long-form discussion
  • Strong sense of project ownership and excitement to be an integral part of a growing organization
  • Flexibility to work unconventional hours in a 24-hour news environment, including weekends, overnights, or holidays
  • It is preferred that the candidate work on-site full-time in Washington, D.C.
