The Community Services Department provides exceptional cultural, educational, recreational, and social services to enhance and maintain a high quality of life and attractive physical environment in the Beverly Hills community. The Library's mission is to provide resources, services, and a place to read, connect, relax, and learn. The Library supports literacy, life-long learning, civic engagement, and cultural awareness. To achieve these goals, the Library provides: access to library materials and guidance in finding quality, trusted information, events for all ages to support life-long learning and early literacy, and school year and summer programs to promote a lifetime love of reading. The Library helps adults and children by offering access to hundreds of thousands of books, audiobooks, e-books and other materials. Thousands of patrons are reached through outreach activities to schools, homebound patrons, Roxbury Book Nook, and community events.

What We're Looking For

The Beverly Hills Public Library has two openings for a Librarian II. One vacancy is in the Adult Reference Department and the second vacancy is in the Children’s Services Department. Incumbents may be assigned to work where needed at the discretion of the Library Services Manager, and based on the needs of the department.

The Adult Reference Department position will be responsible for providing outstanding customer service and high-quality reference and readers’ advisory in-person, by phone, and while roaming and moving about the library frequently. The position will also be responsible for providing reference support, some collection development, research, and other duties as assigned. The incumbent will be the liaison for the Teen Advisory Committee (T.A.C.) and work extensively with teens and help develop programming that is focused on teens.

The Children’s Services Department position will be responsible for leading story time, working with children under the age of twelve, assisting students with school assignments, locating resources, and finding appropriate books to read. They will also develop, prepare and present children's programs.

Incumbents must be knowledgeable of Library online resources and databases, able to multi-task and work in a fast-paced environment with frequent interruptions. Incumbents must be flexible to work in all services of the library though they will have dedicated assignments. The ideal candidate will be enthusiastic, adaptable, team oriented, customer focused and tech savvy. This position reports directly to the Librarian III.

Desired Qualifications

  • Previous experience working in Adult sections for a public library.
  • Previous experience working in Children sections for a public library.
  • Professional experience working for a public library.
  • Experience planning and presenting library programs for adults and/or children.

Schedule And Hours

All work will performed on-site, 5 days a week. This is a non-teleworking position. Additionally, incumbents will be assigned to work one evening shift per week.

Disaster Service Workers: All City of Beverly Hills employees are designated Disaster Service Workers through state and local law (California Government Code Section 3100-3109). Employment with the City requires the affirmation of a loyalty oath to this effect. Employees are required to complete all Disaster Service Worker-related training as assigned, and to return to work as ordered in the event of an emergency.

Major Duties

  • Assists patrons at public desks in using library materials and services; elicits and interprets information requests in person and by telephone; instructs and assists patrons in using the on-line catalog and in making effective use of the Library's collections; directs patrons to sources of information; provides readers' advisory services; assists patrons in research.
  • Researches, evaluates, and selects materials for the Library's collection in all formats, including books, magazines, CD-ROM and on-line services; maintains the collection; selects materials to be withdrawn.
  • Compiles bibliographies on specific topics; maintains files of materials and answers to patrons' questions.
  • Assists the Librarian III or the Senior Librarian in preparing reports and statistics; prepares and distributes handouts explaining the Library's services.
  • Plans and presents programs.
  • Assists in training and supervising subordinate staff, including interns, librarians, pages, and volunteers.
  • Attends meetings and represents the Library with schools, community agencies and organizations.
  • Performs related duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Master's degree in Library Science and two years experience at a professional level.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

  • Ability to communicate clearly and effectively.
  • Ability to follow written and oral instructions.
  • Ability to provide high level of commitment to public service.
  • Knowledge of standard library policies, practices and procedures.
  • Knowledge of standard library reference tools and sources of information.
  • Knowledge of bibliographic search procedures.
  • Skill in interpreting patrons' needs.
  • Skill in assisting patrons in answering reference questions.
  • Skill in locating materials.
  • Skill in evaluating and selecting materials in various formats.
  • Skill in promoting interest in libraries and reading.

Other Requirements

Some positions may require specialized training and experience in the areas of reference services, children's services, or fine and performing arts:

  • REFERENCE: Extensive knowledge of and experience working with reference resources in print, CD-ROM and online formats in general reference subject areas.
  • CHILDREN'S: Assists students in interpreting school assignments, locating resources and finding appropriate books to read; develops, prepares and presents children's programs. Extensive knowledge of books and other library materials for children from babies/toddlers through middle school.
  • FINE ARTS/PERFORMING ARTS: Extensive knowledge of and experience working with reference materials relating to 19th and 20th century art; extensive knowledge of and experience working with print, audio and video resources in music, dance, film and other art forms.
