Chelsea Public Library
Part-time: up to 19 hours/week
Saturdays (Required)
Rate: $26 to $28 per hour

POSITION SUMMARY
Under the direction of the Library Director, responsible for providing support for and assisting in the operation of the Children's Department at the library.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS AND DUTIES

  • Evaluate the Library's program of services to Make recommendations on program and service changes and improvements to the Director.
  • Oversee the general environment of the Children's Department Rearrange materials as necessary to maintain an orderly and smooth functioning department. Troubleshoot computer and other equipment when necessary. Supervise Children's Room circulation desk. Perform circulation desk functions as necessary.
  • Advise and assist children, parents, and teachers in selecting, locating and utilizing library resource materials through knowledge of print materials, the computerized catalog, electronic databases, and the Internet. Instruct school-age children in library use, including use of new Library Provide reference assistance to children, parents and teachers. Work with local educators to assure all children are aware of public library services.
  • Plan and conduct programs for children including story hours, films, reading clubs, vacation programs, puppet shows, etc. Prepare programs for private schools and community Prepare special exhibits and compile book lists. Prepare internal and external publicity for programs.
  • Evaluate, review and select department's collection of Periodically evaluate collection and select items to be weeded.
  • Submit reports to Director on circulation statistics, reference, story hours, museum pass program, etc., as needed. Perform other related duties as assigned by the Director.

QUALIFICATIONS (Education, Experience, Skills, Knowledge & Abilities)

Education:

  • Requires a Bachelor of Science Degree in Library Science or related field from an accredited college or university
  • Graduate students currently enrolled in a Master’s in Library Science program welcomed.
  • Master's in Library Science from an ALA accredited college or university is preferred.

Experience:

  • Requires three (3) years of professional library experience, including previous work with children.
  • A combination of specialized training, education, and/or experience will be considered.

Independent Action:

  • Incumbent functions independently within the broad scope of Library policies and goals, referring personnel decisions and policy revisions to the Library Dire

Supervision Exercised: Direct: None Indirect: Library Staff

SPECIAL CONSIDERATIONS
  • Up to 19 hours per week. Must be available to work Saturdays.

Physical and Work Environment:

  • Environment subject to constant public traffic volume, noise from children's activities and behaviors associated with young children.
  • Extended periods at terminal, on telephone, or operating other office machines requiring eye-hand coordination and finger dexterity.
  • Regular lifting and carrying of library materials, plus files, documents, records, etc.
  • Evening and weekend work may be required.
  • Sound vision and hearing required for public interaction in person and by phone.
  • Must be fully able in standing, walking, bending and reaching.
