General Description
Martin Library serves as the York-Adams District Library Center. The Collection Development Librarian is responsible for the selection and purchase, and maintenance of a comprehensive adult library collection for the District Library Center and provides leadership to selectors of the overall District Library Center collections.

General Requirements
Candidate must have excellent communication skills (i.e., the ability to listen and communicate effectively) and strong analytical and technological skills. Must have the ability to manage a variety of tasks, ability to prioritize, set and measure goals. It is important that the candidate be reliable, a self-starter, and able to work effectively in a team. It is very important the individual have good eyesight and is able to read small print.
Education & Experience Requirements
- A Master’s Degree in Library Science from an ALA accredited institution
- A minimum of three years’ experience in Collection Development, including selection and deselection of collections.
- Advanced knowledge of software applications including Excel and other Microsoft Office Suite applications
- Knowledge of integrated library systems, including cataloging, circulation, acquisitions modules.
- Candidate must have current PA Child Abuse Clearance, PA Criminal History Clearance, FBI Fingerprint-Based Clearance, and Mandated Reporter Training Certificate.
Duties and Responsibilities
- Selects and purchases all adult materials for Martin Library, the York-Adams District Library Center. Selections must be made in accordance with the YCL Collection Development Policy to meet the needs of the diverse York County community.
- Analyze and evaluate information from a variety of professional sources to make informed decisions about collection development.
- Informs YCL Branch purchasing through Purchase Alert/High Hold reports of Martin Library preorders.
- Build the Martin Library collection to meet the needs of YCL and the York-Adams District.
- Plans and prioritizes work to meet commitments aligned with organizational goals.
- Provides input in the distribution of Martin Library’s annual collection budget funds.
- Meets regularly with the Martin Library Director.
- Meets regularly with the Martin Members Services Librarian, the Children’s Manager and Teen Manager to maintain the overall collection of the District Library Center including recommended items to be weeded.
- Advises and trains Martin Library selectors in areas related to ordering, collection development and weeding of the collection.
- Collaborate with ILL staff on purchase suggestions.
- Keeps current with collection development tools, trends and best practices including Collection HQ.
- Reviews and analyzes collection usage reports as collection management tools.
- Selects and purchases collection for YCL ebranch.
- Monitors standing order profiles and makes adjustments as circulation dictates.
- Reviews submissions from local authors and selects items to add to the collection.
- Serves on ad hoc committees relevant to collections and diversity in the community.
- Engages in professional development activities relevant to collection development.
- Evaluates donated materials and determine if items are suitable for addition to Martin Library’s collection.
- Engage with community opportunities to assure a comprehensive knowledge of the York County community.

- Collaborate with colleagues, both within the library and across the community, to develop a strong and well-rounded collection that meets the needs of all users.
Physical Requirements
- Must be able to lift up to 30 pounds from ground level to waist level.
- Must be able to bend, squat, and kneel occasionally throughout work shift.
- Must be able to push/pull carts weighing up to 120 pounds.
- Required to perform simple grasping and fine manipulation tasks with both hands and requires acceptable corrected vision (in both eyes) and acceptable corrected hearing.
- Depresses computer keyboard keys and use of mouse.
- Must be able to reach, lift, and stretch throughout the day.
- Clear and comprehensive speech is required to communicate effectively in the performance of this job.
